So today I woke up as usual and went to work...
The work day itself was kinda of boring
just correcting some things and filing others
Then came the brazil match and Haitians were on the edge of their seats
at half time the government came out with a memo on gaz price increase between 47% and 51 % ...
Then Brazil lost
And haiti went up in smoke
Almost every street corner sprouted burning tires, intersections grew huge rocks and trucks stopped sideways in corners..
It was not yet 5 o'clock
Then rocks started flying, I work at a bank... the front door was shattered rocks landed a few feet from us... no one penetrated the bank though. My blood pressure was also shattered, I looked at under my desk and wondered if I should hide there, like they do in the states for mass shootings, then I went to look at the shattered door, my very uncooperating phone was too low on juice to take pictures but you can find them on the web.
So there we were over 100 employees stuck at work and unable to go home, some gritted their teeth, left their cars in the parking lot and took their feet for a walk home.
The rest of us were more cautious, a few of the foot walkers rushed back in telling of being held and ransonmed or being threathened to become kin to the burning tires.
Nerves were frayed, a falling POS caused a co-worker to dive for cover and another to attempt to fly without wings.
Time slowed, most of us were reaching out to family members, kids, parents, partners, spouses... everyone was stuck somewhere that was not home.
Rumors were flying high, carried by the ever faithful world wide web... as if the reality was not bad enough.
The only constant speech was "stay were you are, don't venture in the streets"... rocks continued to fly without licenses and smoke from the fires caused the sun to go down early.
Stuck in limbo, we did as all good limboist do and tried to make light of our situation... that helped some. But worry burrows deep and furrows faces.
From time to time I went outside in the parking lot, being one of the few human smokers in my building, followed by the warnings of my friends... but I needed these moments of quiets and peace to settle my nerves.
Time passed it was now nearing midnight and the last warning was that things were not going to get better and that anyone caught out after 5 am would get what's coming to them... my heart tried to scuba dive without an oxigen tank.
Then a car went by... who knew human ears could perk up like cats? ours sure did... then another car a few minutes later, we rushed to social media our comon denomitor and yes people were doing the impossible... brave or foolish souls depending on your view were braving the outside to get home... now i have no car... so my perked ears were perked needlessly, as I sat there smoking on a curb I saw a car pull up to our gates, not being brave my first instinct was to run back inside, but my perked cat ears went along with my cat curiosity and led my feet to the gate...
"who are you? and did you come to pick up someone?
"we are so and so and we are here to pick up co-worker x"
Shocked was my only reaction... "x? doesn't she live near me... can you also drive me home?"
"ok" said the good samaritans... as simple as that I became a foolish brave and trough renmants of smoke and ruins of rocks made my way finally home to my boy at 15 minutes past midnight.
Now I can not sleep so I tell the tale of my horrendous day.
