A question has come up about the relationship of the "views count" to the actual number of viewers of a thread.
Edit: Testing to see the results have proved to be what can best be described as variable.

Catman's best guess is that the number is generated using a random number algorithm.

My best guess is that HAL is just messing with us Remember, HAL was just a victim of what the military programmed him to do.

CatmanSomeone had asked about this yesterday and, being curious, I did some test postings here and watched the numbers. What was funny (odd funny) was that JUST opening the thread … no replys … The "views" went up by a count of one ,,., and then three and then four and then the count went down again and started over. "Variable" seemed a good enough way to describe it. Might have been HAL, maybe not !

I don't know what to do about it, but I tried once: It wasn't so much a "do something about it" as a " how many views is a thread actually getting ?". I remember when the question came up last year but not the answer. What was funny last night was watching the views count going up to one and then to 3, 6, 10, 1.. it was strange. I noticed that views seem to increase by one and then various #s depending on whether a reply, a quote, a tag, etc was attached. I shall let the poster know what I found out. Thanks !

Beats me.I'm guessing it's either a plugin or browser issue (as implied in the support thread.) Or maybe bartlesby is having a laugh.

RE: laugh …. That's kinda what I had suspicions thoughts about when the numbers were bouncing up and down. It WAS pretty funny ! That HAL is such a card !

The number of posts / views returned on any given poster or thread seem to fluctuate occasionally. Though certain browser versions do seem to fetch pages multiple times for reasons known only to them. One version of Chrome would fetch a page 3 times (leading to 3 views per 1 view) but that was patched out awhile ago. Certain extensions / plugins also cause the same effect.
