I guess a flop is a mediocre failure, while a bomb can alter ppl's careers.

Between a flop and a bomb? Flop is not meeting expectations. It could make money at the Box Office, but underperform critically and/or financially. Basically, the film didn't do what it set out to do:
Green Lantern (It was supposed to kick start the original shared universe in DC. It was supposed to be like DC's Iron Man. Lesser known mainstream character, funny guy as the lead) Water World (Supposed to start a water version of Mad Max trilogy. It was Costner's answer to Mel Gibson) Justice League (Supposed to course correct the Snyderverse in DC and be more 'upbeat' and 'optimistic' and instead turned everyone away. Should have just let Snyder make his version) Wyatt Earp (Supposed to be the next major Epic from Hollywood after Dances with Wolves) Indiana Jones IV (Supposed to be in line with the OT. It had the same people involved) Solo (Not even crossing 400M world wide and it has the "Star Wars" name)
Then their are 'Oscar Bait' films that fail to generate Oscar buzz.
Suburbicon with Matt Damon The Monuments Men Directed by George Clooney Battle of the Sexes
or J. Edgar with Leo DiCaprio and directed by Clint Eastwood Bomb:
Financial and critical failure. Possibly has irreparable damage for some actors or directors.
Gigli (No explanation needed) Cutthroat Island (killed Geena Davis' career as a lead) Jupiter Ascending (Last Chance for the Wachowskis. They'll never get a major budget from a major studio again. The Matrix effect is gone) John Carter (Now we know what Disney's Marvel Universe would look like without the help of Marvel Studios) Fantastic Four Remake

The first one is an inconvenience that one might recover from. The latter is an embarrassment which could end careers.

What the Godfather said. Flop is less of a financial disaster than a bomb, and the latter implies critic savaging too.
