Nobody is directly oppressing me, person to person, with their religion. However, because of the legacy of religion, I don't have the right to die, which is unacceptable. The only way for me to get my rights is for those delusions to be shattered (including those of religious atheists). As nice as I'm sure that many of them are, if they get to maintain their religion, then I don't get my freedom.

Personally? For the most part no. I'll ask gay teens being forced into conversion therapy by their parents, children sexually abused by priests, people disowned by the religious parents because they don't want to follow their faith, and women being forced to wear a bunch of towels in the Middle East how they feel about religion.

Imo all your points are correct except for children sexually being abused by priests. Sure that happens. But not because of religion. More because of access of availability of prey for the predator. Happens all the time in other secular occupations as well. |

Actually, there may be many. That's what allows people like Jimmy Saville to go unpunished or 1000s of western sex tourists who prey on third world kids to go un-arrested.. The thing is that religious priests who are abusing kids are found out more easily because there is a greater focus on exposing or outing them. Most people who actually indulge in such abuses are not even found out. Sometimes wives know of their husbands activities but won't out their husbands. It's sad but it is true. My argument should not be taken as defence of religious people. What I am saying is that it is not religion which causes such things but the situation. Sure you make a good point that there are religious organisations which try to protect abusers (and they deserve condemnation irrespective of whether secular organisations also do that or not) . But what I am saying is that that is also not an exclusive feature of religious people. Many times you wouldn't get a sniff if crime even happened. Religious people, rich people, entertainment industry, military, police et al all do jobs of cover up. |

To answer the OP: Religious people may not be very powerful individually to bother an average non-religious person but they can make society bad overall by strength of numbers. Outside of western world and a few other countries homosexuals cannot express themselves in public. Who is responsible for that if not religious people who get laws passed according to moral values of their religion? Millions of women have to suffer abuses because religion has made our societies misogynistic and male oriented. There are countries where people who follow religion other than the religion of majority can not even live with safety. Who is responsible for that if not religious people? I know that there are many good religious people but the fact is that religious people are good only at individual levels. When they bring their voices together then they create problems for kids, women, minorities etc.etc.

I don`t hate religious people i sometimes find them very annoying but i also find many atheist annoying.

Are you denying the anti-homosexual stance maintained by many religious organisations throughout the history? Or for that matter many religions outrightly preach against homosexuality and ask for discrimination?
Even in western society where in last 30 years rights for homsexuals have been improving the better part of credit for making conditions better for homosexuals goes foremost to secular way of thinking and vast number of atheists who have taken a very strong stance against discrimination of homosexuals.
Same way religion has made life worse for women. And almost all religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, seemingly innocent Jainism and all three Abrahmic faiths have been guilty of spreading misogyny. Even today you can see misogyny in either subtle or straightforward form in most parts of world.
I am glad that you agree that religions have led to persecution of non-adherents.

To me it seems like common sense that won't happen. p.s. sure, cut back on pollution where you can, as that can't be a bad thing, but I am totally against anything that's going to tax the common person over it as all it does is screw people. That's very dubious reasoning. Yes the Earth has been around for billions of years, but humans have only been around for thousands of years, a very small time fame in comparison. Also mass pollution has only been around for about a couple hundred years after the industrial era and has only become much more exacerbated with the dramatic increase of cars over the last 100 years or so. Majority of species that existed are now extinct, so it's not that hard to believe humans could eventually become extinct as well.

Pollution is definetly a factor, though I'm more concerned about overpopulation and not enough resources. Obviously pollution is going to be a byproduct of increasing human populations.

I'm not sure how taxes and regulations to maintain clean drinking water and breathable air is "screwing people". Do you want us to have third world conditions and have to wear breathing masks all the time?

What makes that extremely sad is that there are gods in India depicted as indulging in homosexual activities and there are famous temples full of homosexual depictions. India was one of the more tolerant countries toward homosexuality but Victorian moral code was implemented in 19th century and people were thoroughly brainwashed into being homophobic. I hope some sense prevails and all the discriminations against gays are elements from Indian society. But considering the fact that all three major religious fanatics - Hindus, Muslims and Christians of India are against homophobia it will be difficult to do so. The only bright spot for homosexuals of India is that it is not so openly talked about topic. Homosexual relations of course happens behind the curtains but there is no chase by people to get those people arrested even if there are laws in name. yeah, but it is sad that homosexuals cannot marry and ascertain their relations in public. |
