If it's a huge hit with audiences, box office, and critics, This would give the DCEU 2 hits out of the last 3. And Justice League while far away from good, it didn't exactly do that much damage. Overall that would give DCEU: 1 decent movie Man of Steel, 1 very disappointing movie Batman v Superman, 1 garbage fire of a movie Suicide Squad. 1 aggressively competent movie Justice League, 1 good/great movie Wonder Woman, and 1 newly good movie Aquaman.
With Aquaman doing well in all those categories, the DCEU would be seen as getting some control correcting DCEU's path. Maybe more of the tarnish that's been on the DCEU will evaporate.
If the DCEU can't score a big hit with Aquaman then it needs to massively flop, like Fant4stic's epic flop, no in between. A flop would be the definitive break WB needs to scrap the DCEU and work on another project. After a good resting period, DC/WB should get back to what they are good at: singular movies.
Instead of worrying how the next movie will effect the over all Universe, WB could put all their time, money and effort in just making a great stand alone movie. Once the singular movies start to perform well critically and financially only then should the WB look into a universe. The number 1 priority though should be to make the film great, and then worry about fan service and tie ins later.
You aren't starting a new universe, but you are closing one down. This means it might not be an interconnected story line with other movies, but you are creating something new. The Billion Dollar question is: "What character would you use to usher in new era?"
They've tried Green Lantern to launch a rebooted universe and that didn't work. It wasn't the actors fault though. They started that movie without a script. Most of Green Lantern's bad after taste has evaporated from public thought. I think that it actually helped when Deadpool ripped on Green Lantern to finally get us over that movie. You've already rebooted Superman with Superman Returns and Man of Steel. Maybe the new era should be ushered in on a character that isn't OP and hard to write for. I wouldn't go Superman. An obvious choice would be Batman. While he has proven to be a money maker for WB, I don't think it should start with Bats. It seems like a crutch now. And if I have to see Martha Wayne's pearls break 1 more time I'll scream. We don't have to show the night in Crime Alley. We could just allude to it. . If you went with a new Wonder Woman you run into the audience seeing it as a cash grab now that the DCEU failed. Never thought I'd say this but they would have to recast Gal Gadot and that will be difficult. You can't start off a new era of stand alone with a movie that just killed your Universe, so Aquaman is out of the question. I don't know who I would start with. I think it should be a lower budgeted affair. Something with less spectacle to start with. Using a 2nd tier hero maybe in order or not. A different take on the Flash from the DCEU version and the CW version could work (I am no way calling Flash a 2nd Tier hero). You have name recognition from the general public. The Flash can be handled with a lighter tone but still have some depth. Use Greg Berlanti mantra for the CW shows. Each show/movie should have 3 things: Heart, Humor and Spectacle. (just tone down the spectacle part of it). It will be an origin movie, so go with the main plot of Barry's Dad getting falsely convicted of the murder of his wife. You could make the overall genre different than just a superhero movie. You could make it a murder mystery with a superhero.
What the DCEU and WB absolutely do not need is a middling result critically, audience score , or financially. It can't miss any of those. It needs to be a hit in all three. Having 2 but not the 3rd or just having mediocre scores in each, keeps DCEU limping along. It it just makes enough money to keep going, it would be hard for the Executives to scrap it and start over.
So lets hope for a extreme reaction to Aquaman either way. I personally want to see a hit, but I can get over a flop. Especially if it helps WB make great Superhero movies again.
