Just wondering with all the buzz the Hellraiser franchise has been getting, I was wondering how it would compare to another well-hated series, Resident Evil. Of course both of them are hated for different reasons: one is simply bad with so many unnecessary straight-to-DVD sequels, and the other is hated because it ruined a once great video game series.
For instance, I don't necessarily hate either one, but I might say Hellraiser is worse, even if the first two HR are technically better than any RE movie. The thing is that it has sequels that are way worse than all the RE movies IMO, and at least the RE films are meant to be enjoyably bad. The later HR sequels can end up being just boringly bad. Plus, the hate for RE never quite resonated with me as much because I never played one of the games (sacrilege to say), so I've always enjoyed them for what they were.
But that's just me. What are your thoughts?

I find the RE movies far more entertaining as long as I go into them expecting nothing but high-octane nonsense with no effort nor apologies made to disguise that's what they're all they're about.
I am not a gamer so have no reverence to the RE game series that might put me at odds with the movies in the way it might a purist.
I just find that after a hard day at work, if I sit in front of my TV and find a RE movie playing (I don't own any), it is very easy to let my brain unwind and watch the delightful Milla Jovovich kitted out in fantastic outfits engaging in all manner of kick-ass action with mutant critters and zombies!
The HR movies however offer me none of that enjoyable romp satisfaction. Even the more commonly acclaimed (within the genre) first two movies did not impact on me the way they did with many. They were certainly the best of those I saw in the series but I found them quite difficult to warm to and unappealing in many ways.
As for the remainder of the series, I believe I only saw 2 more and have no idea how many more they made. By the time HR4 arrived, we were certainly into the quagmire of a series with little to offer, trying desperately to grind out more mileage from a concept that had well and truly run it's course. It didn't help that the movies took themselves quite seriously and had little fun to offer in the way the RE movies did - despite the fact that that series too was running with a recycling plot. I think it helped the RE movies that they made no pretences about their ambitions and just looked to serve cyberpunk techno mayhem up in spadefuls. The HR movies came accross as if they should be taken very seriously and pondered over as important works. Sadly, for me they never merited that kind of attention. In the end, I found the later HR movies unscary, uninteresting, not much fun and ultimately tedious and boring. Heaven knows what the later movies in the series are like - I couldn't get past HR4 simply because by then, the series left me with no motivation to do so.

I feel like I'm the biggest Hellraiser fan on here, and yet I'm still not very fond of the franchise as a whole.

I haven't seen all the Hellraisers but agree that the first 2 blow away anything in the Resident Evil series.

Resident Evil is probably worse because even the first one sucks.. but to be fair I don't think I've seen past the second one.

Im oK with both but the Hellraisers got lame after part 3. Resident Evil Im fine with I only liked 1, 2 and 4. But I dont like those as much as the first 3 Hellraisers.
So I guess my answer is Resident Evil.

Resident Evil by far. The first 2 Hellraiser movies are much better than any Resident Evil movie. The first Resident Evil movie is the only decent one and I only like it a little bit more than Hellraiser 3 and 4. The worst Hellraiser movies are worse than than the worst Resident Evil movies though.

The Hellraiser series started off extremely well with its first two entries (better than any Resident Evil film) but basically got gradually worse with every installment. While the Resident Evil series on the other hand, though never nearly as good as the best Hellraiser movies, never got quite as bad as the worst Hellraiser sequels. First four Hellraiser films > Resident Evil series > All other Hellraiser movies

Hadn’t seen either but I was under the impression that the Hellraisers was initially well regarded?

Hadn’t seen either but I was under the impression that the Hellraisers was initially well regarded? Well the first one is considered a classic of horror and the second is a major fan favourite. The rest aren't that well regarded, except for maybe the third which is helmed as a guilty pleasure.

Can't say for sure, only seeing the first two Hellraiser movies. But I wasn't very impressed with them.

The first one is too slow and the Cenobites are hardly in it. I really need to see the second one again before commenting.

Resident Evil. Simply because the first two Hellraiser movie are amazing. High praise for a movie whose director had absolutely no idea what he was doing.

The main focus was centered around Julia and Frank, the REAL villains in the film.
