I believe it has. While it's a great source of information and media, and online gaming is great, I think the downsides are pretty bad that we should start to consider whether we would be better off without it, as great as it is.
It has made people stupider, meaner and lazier. And it gives paedos and would-be terrorists an avenue to find eachother and share their evil ways. It also gives bullies an avenue to be mean to people for no reason in complete anonymity with no consequences.

More Harm...
It has also started destroying our local communities, with all this online shopping trend. Too many empty businesses every where you look.

In general, with a few important exceptions, I think it has done long term cultural and societal harm for the sake of short term convenience and entertainment.

Defintely more harm. It's a superficial world and it makes people more superficial in general.

The Internet connects us more globally But we are less connected to our own community.

Finally a thread where all the answers are intelligent and on-topic. π Rather than trolls/idiots giving stupid pointless responses such as "ok." or "Edgy post, brah."

At first it seemed like Brave New World. The first and ONLY time in the history of humanity that the average schmoo had access to real, true free speech to say whatever the hell they wanted, printed in cyberspace for all to see.
Then slowly but surely the corporate meatball began to creep in spreading it's evil tentacles of hatred and censorship enacting various leveling mechanisms in an attempt to monetize the internet.
Now we have this - perverse spectacle of human foibles and mental masturbation.
It was fun while it lasted.

I think the benefit has outweighed the harm. I agree that it has made people in general lazier, but NOT stupider or meaner. If it seems people are meaner, it is because the anonymity gives people the ability to express mean spirited thoughts that they surely would still have without the internet. As for pedos, I say the internet has actually made a great improvement as sexual predators are now easier to catch.

The world is the same as it ever was. The internet only made what was already there more widely seen.

It has such incredible potential for good but it has been perverted by those who thrive in the anonymity it provides.

I think social media itself has done the most harm with people cyber bullying, trolling, acting vain, doing insane crazy things just to get more likes and followers.

I don't condone cyber bullying, but I think many people blow it out of proportion. When I think of bullying I think of people beating you up and stealing your lunch money.

Times have changed ^^^^^ those were the "good old days". The internet has enabled the possibility of escalation and some kids commit suicide and others take a gun to school to "get revenge" after relentless on-line crap !
"Adults" laughing it off or acting like it doesn't happen is part of the problem. Telling a kid who is being bullied to "suck it up", "ignore them" etc really just makes things worse because that isn't support or solution.

pornography is a huge problem, Roberto. and perhaps you are kidding, π΅, perhaps you are not. I don't know. but I think it affects how men and women interact in person. In general, people don't interact well in person. they don't know how. I pass people texting who are oblivious to their surroundings. there is a problem, I think.

Yeah, definitely more harm since we also have to deal with trolls on the internet as well.

No. Certainly there is a bad side. But I think the good outweighs the bad. Mostly we tend to dwell on the bad things β¦ what do you feel is the "good" in the internet? Not intended as an argument β¦ just a question to perhaps get some positive dialoguing going !

The Internet allows us to communicate, share information, ideas, opinions, etc. more effectively and efficiently. One reason technology and life are progressing more quickly than ever before is the Internet. It will allow us to achieve more, faster than ever before in human history.
