How did DC's male superhero become Marvel's female superhero? How did the original Captain Marvel end up being called the thing he (or Billy Batson) says? Also, isn't Dwayne Johnson supposed to be Black Adam? Is he in the movie? By the way, the original Captain Marvel was the very first traditional comic book superhero to transition to live-action film (in the 1941 twelve-chapter movie serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel). Its a long story, but here's the gist:
In the 1940s Captain Marvel outsold Superman, so DC sued the company that published Captain Marvel and got them to stop publishing it on the basis that he was too similar to Superman. So Captain Marvel disappeared.
During that time Marvel comics created their own Captain Marvel and ran with it.
THEN, believe it or not, DC bought the rights to the original Captain Marvel, the one they sued to go away. Yeah, the balls, right? BUT they couldn't publish him using the title Captain Marvel on the covers because Marvel now had their own version. So they titled his new comics SHAZAM! instead.
In the latest version of the character they decided to actually name him SHAZAM! instead of just using Captain Marvel inside the comics only. This way they could have the name of the characters ON the covers and differentiate themselves from Marvel's Captain Marvel.
Also, Marvel went a step further and killed off their male Captain Marvel and later turned Ms. Marvel into their latest Captain Marvel.
In short, Shazam! is the original Captain Marvel, but once again MCU gets to beat DCEU to the punch.
By the way, the original company and creators of the original Captain Marvel... they dont get shit.

What is interesting is that during the forties Captain Marvel was outselling and out-innovating Superman. Captain Marvel had the first concept of a young sidekick with the same powers in the form of Captain Marvel Jr. DC followed up with Superboy. Captain Marvel then had Mary Marvel. DC followed up with Supergirl. Captain Marvel even had the first super pet! DC followed up with Krypo and Streaky.
Seeing that none of this was working they decided to sue altogether claiming that Captain Marvel was too much like Superman in the first place. Which is true. But the insult added to injury is that after suing them so bad that they went out of business, they then bought the rights to the character so they could publish it! LOL!
And before you get all defensive Marvel has done the same thing many times. Its actually quite the norm in the comics biz to sue other companies as a means of not losing market share. Fucked up but true.

Stop trying to make Marvel the bad guys at every turn. I'm not making anyone to be the bad guys. I'm just stating the facts. The original Captain Marvel character is the character who is now known as Shazam in DC Comics. Marvel took the character name long after the original Shazam character used that name. It would be like if McDonald's stopped making Quarter Pounders any more and then after a few years Burger King makes a new burger and calls it a Quarter Pounder. Nah, it would be more like if Wendy's made McDonald's go out of business and Burger King started making a burger called the Quarter Pounder. Then years later Wendy's bought the rights to make a burger that looked like a Quarter Pounder. You missed some steps.
