One of the most regrettable examples of vinyl discs gone AWOL is my 12" Polydor copy of 'I Ain't Never', seven minutes of rhythmic pumping popular funk. But, moreover, I regret losing more what was tucked away on the 'B-Side' : a staggering eleven minute cut of 'Theme From Shaft' called Shaft II.
Hard to find now, but probably on CD somewhere. I was pleased to see it on YouTube. Never mind the 'Disco Version' description in the header - this is anything but (the label had 'Extended Version' if I remember rightly) it bleeds soul, hemorrhages funk and moves like a well paced 747 to it's final destination. If you like the Shaft Theme and haven't yet heard this you're in for a treat. The absence of the original vocals (apart from the odd cry of "...Shaft!") allows you to fully appreciate the wonderful instrumentation and orchestration at work here.

I kept thinking the original Shaft theme had a disco feel, especially when the strings come in. Not sure what the first disco track was (Rock the Boat?) but I think it was in '73 or '74.
