Several of those shows aired years if not decades after BET had launched. My argument is that BET was created as a way to more prominently feature black actors and actresses, which on pretty much every other channel were relegated to supporting roles (if at all). Yes, there were some shows which were pushing the boundaries (CBS's rural purge), but it was still a small fraction of the television landscape. While there have certainly been more black people on television in the last 40 years (thought still shows into the 90s like Seinfeld or Friends rarely featured any black people despite being set in New York), that wasn't the case in the 40 years prior to that. That is what led to the creation of BET. Make no mistake, I'm not saying every person in television at the time hated black people, but most certainly weren't in a hurry to feature them. This is what necessitated BET. There is no WET because there was no need nor demand for it. 95% of shows featured white casts. Maybe even more. I don't disagree with most of what you are saying here, though I do have a different perspective on some things you brought to bear. I was specifically responding to your comment that people refused to show a black person on TV and that black-oriented TV shows were in the "extreme minority." And there were a lot of TV shows which I couldn't remember the name, so I didn't list them. I agree that the number of black TV shows is disproportionate with the black population, but "extreme minority"? That is an assertion with which I disagree. Also, if you were to look more critically at TV shows in the '80s, you'd find a lot more racially blended shows than you'd think. If people were trying to keep black people off TV, they did a terrible job. What do you think about Bounce TV? I used to watch it often, but they put a court show on in the time slot I'm most able to watch it, so now I don't watch it as often and I forget to seek the channel out later. I really like the channel, though, and I support it. What do you think led to the rise of Bounce? Finally, I don't know if you are interested, but Larry Wilmore recently interviewed Norman Leer on his podcast. They spoke a lot about '70s TV. Oh, I agree. But again, a lot of that came after BET was created. I'm not saying the extreme minor representation of black people came in the 80s. But for decades before that, it was very true. I remember watching Nick at Night when it had shows from the 50s-70s, and rarely would there even be one black person. Certainly not featured in the main cast. Maybe just as a bit part. That is when people were trying to keep blacks off tv. The creators of the Dick Van Dyke show have talked about how they had to fight with the studio execs over the ending of "That's My Boy?" simply because the pay off was an African American couple. I honestly can't say anything about Bounce. I haven't had cable since 2010. All I can say is that I see nothing wrong with a traditionally under-represented group trying to have something to bring themselves up to prominence.

Ha ha ha ha. Thank you. I needed a good laugh. And no, says the guy who actually acknowledges history. You're welcome. I'm happy you can laugh at yourself. Most white libs are far too uptight to do that. Not to mention too busy patting themselves on the backs for prattling on and on and on and on on a message board. Us swarthy folks sho do preshate that boss. You a hero. Oh wait you're only crying about the plight of black folks. Y'all don't give a shit about the rest of us non Caucasians. Unless we move into your neighborhood of course THEN you're concerned. Then again most of us do as well as you if not better. It's odd how my "conservative" friends see me as just a guy but my liberal friends see me as someone to show off to other liberals. Why are y'all like that? I'm seriously asking. Probably the same reason you only see them as "liberals" or as "conservative" friends.

That's you projecting. Let's try the sentence without the political designations. " It's odd how my friends see me as just a guy but my friends see me as someone to show off to other friends." Gosh without the descriptors it's almost as senseless as you, huh? Nice attempt to try and avoid answering my question. Let's try again. Why do most liberals like to show off their non Caucasian friends to other liberals? I'm in pics on Facebook of people I met once and don't really know. Granted I'm a very attractive guy but it's still perplexing. You seem like the kind of guy that can explain it to me. Hmmm what's your real name and where you stay at? I hope you don't have a pic of me on Facebook.

That's because your question doesn't apply to me. I'm neither white nor liberal.
Now do you see how senseless your entire post was?
You really should try talking to your friends if you want to know what they're thinking. Maybe if you didn't label them as some arbitrary extreme on the political spectrum, you guys would have an actual friendship.

I'm starting to understand what you are saying, PreachCaleb. I guess I give a pass (right or wrong) to programming in the '50s and '60s, since it was still a time of racial ignorance and prejudice. Movies were taking the lead in the 1960s. I do think the '70s is different, though, as I think some of the best TV shows of the '70s featured African Americans.
By the way, I looked up in Wikipedia when BET was formed, and it listed 1980, as a block of programming on Nickelodeon. Haha
By the way, Bounce TV isn't on cable. It's one of those over-the-air channels that are sponsored by network affiliates. I think in my area, Bounce is provided by my local CBS affiliate. On digital cable, it's one of the channels with a "point" designation, like 5.2 or 14.5.

It was a great time for tv shows and movies featuring more racially diverse casts. Wow, Nickelodeon was more progressive than I'd thought. I didn't know that about Bounce.

It's real, but nowhere near as widespread as the SJW crowd tries to make out. There's effectively a propaganda campaign among the SJW crowd, which has had the upshot of increasing racism-oriented issues . . . which I don't think is what they were hoping for.

Actually, it is. There are nationwide statistics showing disparities against non-white, heteronormative, cis males. Particularly against African Americans.
I'm not saying everyone does it, but I am saying it is practically everywhere.

PreachCalebMaybe, but the thing is... the general public likely does not have the details the government/military does. don't you think they would likely know what countries are the biggest threat to us currently than the media or other people not in the know? ; that's why i figure they temp banned the countries they did as they probably see those as the biggest threat to the USA in today's world. but as usual, the liberal courts act up and interfere with the president trying to do his job and protect the citizens here from terrorists. it just don't seem wise to make it easier for people from certain regions of the world to get into the USA given the current climate with ISIS etc. as for your zero deaths thing here in the USA from terrorists since Sep 11th 2001... in terms of major events (like 9/11/01 level) your basically right but there are smaller incidents here and there... www.newsmax.com/TheWire/terror-attacks-radical-islam/2015/12/07/id/704847/naterdawgExactly. it's like if we tried to make a channel called 'White Entertainment Television' they would call it "racist" even though it's exactly the same thing as their BET channel. for the record... i don't mind the BET channel and i am not even suggesting we get a WET(i.e. White Entertainment Television) channel as i was just making a point.

Don't kid yourself. That's what they were. Heck, many refused to even show a black person on a television show or kept them to an extreme minority. It's the reason BET exists in the first place. BET didn't exist until 1980! You really think blacks were not on TV at that time?

What? Racism is only a WHITE thing? Since when? Oh and this "reverse racism" when Blacks do something to whites is not "reverse racism" it is STILL Racism. Racism is a bigotry based on the color of one's skin. It is very often applied to bigotry about where one comes from or was born as well. It shouldn't be, but it is. This is though. In general , Non whites have been and are usually more accepting to whites than the other way around. Not in every single case but in general that seems to be the case.

Just look at the Democrat Party. It started out racist; it's still racist. It likes to try to deflect its racist guilt onto the opposing party. It adopts policies which force the opposing party, which happens to care about all Americans, to seem racist. Democrats are assholes. (Democrat Party) adopts policies which force the opposing party, which happens to care about all Americans, to seem racist.
Did you stop to think before you wrote that dumbass shit?! That is without a doubt one of the stupidest things I have ever read? Forces the opposing party to SEEM racist?! WTF?! Either you are or you aren't! Period. No one can force anyone to seem racist unless that's already in them.

Racism is about systematic, institutional and constant holding back of an entire group of people throughout history, allowing them no real opportunity to uplift themselves, and then blaming them for not doing anything and accusing them of being criminals, and all the while hogging all the privileges and benefits for people of your own kind and not theirs.
When slavery ended they were answered with the Black Codes and Jim Crow laws. When segregation was made illegal they closed down schools rather than integrate. When the civil rights movements ended they were answered with the so-called war on drugs and mass incarceration. Now cops are just outright killing people. Its always there, it just changes form.
Its clear that most of the people on this thread have a lot of research and a lot of living to do. Go out into the world and make friends with people different than yourself, read some books, watch some documentaries, live a little life outside your own circle, see whats really happening. The ignorance is flabbergasting.

Racism is a meaningless term cooked up by communists to stir up divisions and confuse discussion. Instead of addressing grievances, one throws a term out-slandering the person and preventing any concrete discussion.
Those who were the most "racist" in the US colonies were the least likely to want African slavery. The ones who wanted it the most were the globalists. A slaveowner willing to take a black mistress is the exact oppose of a racist when you think about it.
And there was a lot of (and still is) slavery in Africa.
The media (connected to Wall Street) blames race issues on white power--but who owns Wall Street and the Fed? Not the Irish. Not the Swedish. Not the Germans.
Fact is, if things continue, every city will look like Detroit and Baltimore. There does appear to be a racial component to crime statistics.
But when someone like Farrakhan or the chief of the Zulu nation points it out (the latter blamed bad education in South Africa on the post-apartheid regime) they get banished to the wilderness by the Wall Street media.
It is crazy that while whites are blamed as the problem, so many Africans want to go to Europe! Why would they want to go among diehard racists?
Forced multiculturalism aka globalism creates Nazis. Brexit and Trump are proof of it.
