The man had contempt for people born in nobility (even the bastards)? He hated Jon and Benjen and was just seeing 4th episode of season 1 and I think he hated Sam right from the beginning. It was not so much Sam's cowardice and lethargy that he hated as his birth in a high family. He may have been a brave man but I could never like his character.

Thorne was highborn himself. He saw Jon as the complete idiot he is and his prediction came true.

Ser Alliser's resentment stems from losing the war (he sided with the Targaryens) and having to join the Night's Watch. The irony of course is that he treats Jon horribly, but Jon would be his true king (being the son of Rhaegar Targaryen). They made him more unlikable in the show having him be the mastermind behind the assassination of Jon. Alliser isn't involved in the books. He isn't even at the Wall when it happens.

Yeah I agree with that but even Tarly's were loyal to the Targaryens. But he wasn't kind to Sam either. I guess he became a prick after his side lost the war.

Everyone thought the Targaryens were gone for good though. Randyll Tarly had to switch allegiances to protect his own position and his family. Like Randyll tells Dany, he already switched sides once - he couldn't do it again. No one would have trust or respected him at that point. He would just be a turn-cloak.

I couldn't stand him either I think Alliser was a very mean spirited human being he had no reason to dislike Jon or Sam they were behaving following orders I just think he was jealous maybe of Jon quickly becoming a favorite which he did and eventually lord commander I was hoping through the seasons that he would have a change of heart and get along with Jon but he was more relentless

I liked Ser Allister...he felt like a man that had principles and had gone through a lot. He was bitter and angry but I think he did believe he had the best interest of the Watch at heart.

Interesting opinion. Not seen many people appreciate him. Though I know you are generally more empathetic with most characters.
