Prince has 49! And believe it or not, 39 of them are masterpieces.

Merzbow wins, obviously. Muslimgauze was probably more prolific while alive though.
Legendary Pink Dots have 70, according to RYM, which is surprising.

And I balked at working through The Stranglers' 17 studio albums.... Probably only ever listened to a few MERZBOW tracks, just know he's known for releasing a tonne of albums.

And I balked at working through The Stranglers' 17 studio albums.... Why? Most of those albums are good, if not great. There's only a few I haven't heard.

Twenty albums?!? And the guy will always only be known for a three minute tune he released 37 years ago.

Don't mind a bit of The Stranglers but 17 is a daunting task. I'm working through Yes's catalog now and no way I'm doing all 21. Judging by the chart positions of the later albums, I won't be missing much.

Try doing Prince next. When the Purple guy died I immediately went to album one and played all 49 of them in order. I have never done that with any artist, but it really does give you the best picture of who that artist was. Most people just play a greatest hits album when someone passes away. Nah, go for the whole catalogue. It is a difficult task, but rewarding. As for Prince...man did he take some left-hand turns with some albums. That all instrumental light jazz four song N.E.W.S album still blows my mind. What the fuck was this guy doing??? Oh, he was great. Damn, no more surprises from Prince anymore. Damn.

In Britain, he had a few more hit songs including "Down in the Park" and the excellent "Are 'Friends' Electric?". At worst, Numan is a second rate Bowie (and a damn good one at that); at best, he's one of the pioneers of new wave and electronic music and a prolific songwriter and performer to boot. Thanks to his die-hard fans, Gary Numan continues to record and perform.

A perfect song that was truly groundbreaking. I've seen the guy in music documentaries over the years and his words are always interesting and intelligent. I'll never forget those first few times I heard "Cars." I was a rock and roll kid and we weren't supposed to like that crap....but I always used to run to my stereo and play that darn song. All these years later and I still love that tune. Truly a seminal song in the history of modern music.

Elvis Presley...
And he recorded well over that released in his lifetime (not to mention after), between studio albums, soundtracks and a lot of live albums, some of which were released officially (though this doesn't count here). He recorded 784 songs.
He even has his own Follow that Dream (FTD) specialty label for releasing unreleased concerts, alternate takes, jam sessions, etc...
However, he began in an era where kids and teenagers were buying A/B-sided singles, not albums (which they couldn't afford and were largely only bought by adults and the affluent). Albums were only the big thing a decade later. Also, the RIAA didn't start certifying record sales until 1958, missing several of his biggest years (he began recording in 1953, his first Sun singles were 1954 and he began his meteoric rise at RCA in 1956). His recording career spanned 24 years.
