Because "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me," unless one lives in a censorship heavy society. Then words may cause you to lose a job, in jail, get beat up or killed.

Well, for one thing, they can be a lot of fun. Euphemisms can allow for a lot of creativity and wit and bold, sly humor.
