Because overall it totally sucked! Granted we weren't anywhere near where we are now because of the furious increase of the pure volume of films being made via the cheapness of the video camera and the industry has never looked back since, obviously there are no complaints from the die hard horror aficionados, myself included. Though as I soak in the tub filled with blood and splatter, hoping to be stabbed through the shower curtain I got to thinking about those awkward years in which very, very few excellent horror films were spawned worldwide. It's like the 80's schlock rocked and just died on impact in 1990.
So since memory often fails, I went to my 12K ratings on IMDb and sorted out all the horror films that I rated from those 15 years then sorted them out to list my top ratings first and was surprised how few films I rated a ten, I mean it was 15 years of films FFS, yet I was left staring at only nine(9) films in which I gave an actual 10/10 to.
Before you think that I have this abnormally high standards, I have almost the opposite these days and anyone thinking that I'm picky or leaving out good films, I'm really not that person at all. So I looked a bit deeper and counted 17 films I rated 9/10 in the span.
Then came the 8/10's, the good time films, the entertainers, the great one time watchers in which there were much more of, but not more than roughly 80 films at 8/10. I know 106 flicks from 8,9 and 10 combined, not so great.
Lastly the 7/10 rating isn't exactly comprised of bad films, there are what some may call actual classics that abide inside of that number that is comprised of approximately 120 horror flicks, all of which is just imo of course. There are no facts in film(minus biographies and based ons) so everything and I mean everything is all subjective to each perspective viewer, so I don't expect everyone to agree with anything I've stated and hold no misgivings toward those who think I'm crazy, because I've been pirouetting on the blade of insanity for many, many years!
In summary, there are(at least imho) a total of 226 solid, entertaining, spooky, creepy, gore celebrating flicks that make up 15 entire years from 1990-2005. Though we did seem to have a much better quality over quantity ratio as I only have rated 850 total horror flicks during that span of 15 years, now I see that number pass me by on the internet in less than a year with most of them not even worth using 2 minutes of free bandwidth. I'd make a list of film titles and whatnot if anyone actually reads this seriously. I've no clue of exactly how this site operates, works, the traffic or lack of it make draw. I just wanted to start a Horror related discussion somewhere. I've always felt when thinking of the 90's and early 2K's that horror films had no real recognizable style or identity to them and that they were all sort of undefined to a specific era.
Thoughts?
