I tend to think JJ Abrams is equally to blame ending TFA the way he did. That was just one of many mistakes Rian made with TLJ.

Still could have followed up the ending JJ set up. Then after 10-15 minutes, do a time jump and have the words on screen 2 years later... Story could follow from Finn's point of view after he wakes up from coma after 2 years.

JJ made TFA about finding Luke, except he pushed that storyline aside to have our heroes deal with Starkiller Base. Consequently, there wasn't enough time to properly handle Rey meeting Luke, thus forcing TLJ to begin immediately after.

No offense, but that would stink. It's bad enough Finn didn't have any advanced skills in TFA. Now he would wake up from his coma in the sequel without being able to take advantage of the time skip.

On the other hand, one could argue that Abrams gave Rian a wonderful opportunity to capitalize on said mystery boxes. Fans were eager for satisfying answers well before they saw TLJ. Abrams is to thank for that. Imagine what could've happened, to the sequel's reception, the box office total and Rian's reputation with the fans, had he knocked it out of the park instead of subvert our expectations.

JJ did the same crap in Lost and jumped island long before all was to be revealed empty and stupid.
A mystery box is priceless IF you know what is in it and it contributes to the story and character development (hard to do); not however when the purpose of the mystery box is the mystery box itself and, it is basically filled after being set up (JJ's way - easy to do).
I thought that the TFA's mystery boxes were all poor and there are no satisfying/relevant answers: eg
- Why did Luke run away and not clean up the mess, letting evil rise? I have no idea how to resolve that reasonably and without forced magic.
- Who are Rey's parents: Who cares, if they are canon VIPs it's super lame and rehash-y, if they are nobodies the box is empty.
Why is Rey such a Sue? I don't care for an story explanation, maybe she is a Force Goddess who everybody must love and adore, whatever - it's just anoying that she is written this way.
- How does super powerful Snoke figure in? He a Sith despite the rule of 2, where was he during the OT. Why did nobody feel, see, mention him? Why does he rip pff the Empire's failed plans and army design to the T?
- Why is all so rehashed: is this Space Groundhog day or just lack of creativity and balls?
RJ inherited an estate burdened with debts and liabilities, or in more classy words: he just shat out what JJ produced. I would not wish that upon my worst enemy.

All right. I agree that JJ's mystery boxes are a terrible idea because the answers are often unsatisfying and make no sense, like the Khan reveal in Star Trek Into Darkness. I'll criticize Abrams for that. He put Rian in a difficult position by giving us things in TFA that made little sense and by not having an actual plan in place for where the story was going. That said, tons of fans were still eager for satisfying answers to the mystery box setups, whether you care for them or not. Rian Johnson shot himself in the foot by going out of his way to subvert the reveals. He at least had the ability to fill the mystery boxes with whatever he wanted, within reason. Rian chose poorly. That's on him.
