I’m not gonna lie, at one point, I actually was sort of interested in seeing how Sony’s shared universe would’ve worked out. While it was obvious that the attempt to build a shared universe specifically around Spider-Man characters was nothing more than a cynical attempt of cashing in on the then recent craze, it was interesting to wonder just how Sony planned to pull it off. At the time, the concept of a superhero film that revolves around the bad guys was unheard of (remember, this was before Suicide Squad was officially announced), so I remembered being curious about the whole thing. Good times.
Of course, once TASM2 was released, it was clear that the whole thing had virtually no chance of working out, and Sony themselves realized that, considering that the underperformance of the movie was what convinced them to share Spider-Man with Marvel in the first place. Sadly, nearly five years later, it seems as though the people at Sony still haven’t learned their lesson.
Anyway, now that I’ve shared what my thoughts were, what did everyone else think about the idea of the “Sonyverse” at the time?

I thought the TASMs weren't bad in principle, as Sony had the right to do whatever and Spider-Man 3 had neatly wrapped the story begun in 1. They made some questionable choices just for the sake of being different, it seems, and the execution was lacking. But it was unfair how everyone was bashing it for not being Raimi or not being MCU.
Then Spider-Man went MCU and they changed him up even more. He's entertaining in his own way, but apart from Civil War, it doesn't feel like he got his uncle killed and that's what motivated him to be a hero. He's too tied to Stark and the Avengers right now instead of being his own man. It made me appreciate the Raimi films more after the shit-talking the TASMs got because of them kinda turned me off them. Raimi got a lot right at the first go.

I don't because it reminds me of how much Sony robbed us of in terms of Sam Raimi Spider-Man 4.

I was intrigued. I thought the first ASM was just okay but I saw room for improvement. Boy did that go south quickly. Part Two not only repeated the same mistakes as Spider Man 3 but wound up worse. At least the latter didn’t feel like a feature length trailer for a movie that didn’t even happen.

The first one rehashed the Raimi films far too much instead of being it's own movie. The second one tried too hard to set up the Sinister Six. They aren't bad movies, but they don't stand out from the Raimi films enough to be good movies either.
I do think the Sinister Six could work in a Spider-Man film, but the set up needs to be smoother and not so rushed.
The shared Spider-Man universe was never going to work, there just isn't enough there.

A main series with Peter Parker with a few spin-off solo movies for Venom, Black Cat, or even the Sinister Six getting their own movie, that I can see happening with proper planning (hehe).

Yeah a Spider-Man cinematic universe can easily work on it's own.

I didn't mind ASM2, it was thousand times better than the offensive trash that was ASM.
I was looking forward to ASM 3.
I also was in favor of the Garfield-will-be-in-the-MCU rumor that went around.

Why did you find the first film offensive? Thank you for asking, i wasn't going to go into detail otherwise. There was a scene where Peter went nuts, and beat up a bunch of normal everyday people on the subway. I thought to myself, does anyone in this theater not realize what we just saw. Spider-man would NEVER in a million years do something like that. It was basically character assassination.

There were a few other things that bothered me, but honestly, I refused to ever watch it again, so I forgot.

I find it funny that all these years later people are so vocal when they see Superman, Batman, or even Luke Skywalker acting "out of character"

Long time since I rewatched, but he didn't hit them on purpose. Just flailing around with new super strength and sticky hands. More problematic was not quite making Uncle Ben's death his motivation. It was revenge on the killer, then cleaning up his mess with the Lizard, then being a hero because he has the power (and hence responsibility).

Bruce Campbell as Mysterio would have been perfect casting!
