A lot of movie embargoes were lifted during the TIFF festival currently ongoing. Here's a list of movies from TIFF that already premiered at an earlier festival:
*A Star Is Born has gotten even more raves and currently sits at 89/100 on Metacritic. It will probably be one of the major BP contenders.
*Boy Erased has received more positive reviews and has 74/100 on Metacritic and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (7.9 avg rating).
*Can You Ever Forgive Me is receiving more critical acclaim and could be a BP contender. It has a 87/100 on Metacritic and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (8.2 avg rating).
*22 July about the Breivik terrorist attack has received positive reviews with 76/100 on Metacritic and 92% on Rotten Tomatoes (6.8 avg rating).
In other news Roma (Alfonso Cuarón) has won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and is set to be a major contender for BP. It has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes (9.0 avg rating) and an incredible 96/100 on Metacritic.
Beautiful Boy
Reviews so far are generally positive, but don't seem to be good enough for it to become one of the major Best Picture contenders. Chalamet & Carell have received tons of praise and both seem major contenders for Best (Supporting) Actor.
83% Rotten Tomatoes (12 reviews)
66/100 Metacritic (7 reviews)
"Beautiful Boy, made by the Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”), from a script by Luke Davies, is scrupulous and tenderly wounding — a drama that seizes and holds you." - Variety
"Chalamet, a heartthrob unafraid to tackle unglamorous material, so embodies the tragic struggles of a drug-addled young man it’s a wonder he made it through the production, while Carell’s melancholic eyes absorb every detail. It’s a haunting two-hander that allows their talent to tower over everything else." - Indiewire
"There are moments of crushing emotional weight but as the film progresses, they start to carry less power." - The Guardian
Halloween
Reviews for Halloween are in and they're very positive. Hereditary, Suspiria, A Quiet Place, Annihilation and now Halloween. This is quite a year for horror movies. Most reviews call it the best Halloween movie since the original. There are only 3 Rotten Tomatoes reviews yet, but it currently has 100% and an average rating of 8.5/10. Jamie Lee Curtis is getting a lot of praise for her performance. Here are a few of the reactions:
"David Gordon Green‘s Halloween is a love-letter to horror fans – a brutal, scary and sometimes funny sequel that gives the long-running franchise the respect and adoration it deserves." - Slashflim
"Carpenter should be pleased, and so should genre buffs — for once, this is a pic their less geeky girl/boyfriends should enjoy." - The Hollywood Reporter
"It’s a crowd-pleaser, and a beautifully made homage/follow-up to a movie that still holds up well." - JoBlo
"They did it. They actually did it. I’m sitting outside the Elgin Theater with the largest grin on my face. After years of waiting for a Halloween sequel that felt like it did justice to John Carpenter’s original masterpiece of slasher horror, David Gordon Green has brought us a vision of terror that gives fans what they’ve been craving." - Dreadcentral
Widows
As expected, early reactions for Steve McQueen's Widows are universally positive. There are still no reviews on Metacritic & Rotten Tomatoes, but here are some of the reactions:
