I caught the first episode Friday night on Syfy. Nice to see Amanda Warren ("Lucy" in "The Leftovers") in a series again. First episode counted down to the Purge, so I assume the remainder of the episodes will focus on events that occur during a single Purge. It seemed pretty obvious what the "hippie" characters were up to. Also, it seems clear to me that the help at the Purge party are going to try to purge their bosses. Hope there are some surprises along the way.

It was an "All you can eat" crime spree. Right? And yet the ONLY dish they would go for in the movies was murder. It would be nice to see if other crimes are attempted and done.

I'm liking this show so far and agree that they should show other crimes being committed as well.

I'm liking this show so far and agree that they should show other crimes being committed as well. Realistically, there would be many more people trying to steal as much as they could.

Which is why I probably won't bother with the TV series unless they started showing it. Can you imagine? Someone steals a whole bunch of jewelry or TVs or instruments, computers etc on the night it's legal but then get busted the next day when they try to fence it? LOL Now that could be entertainment! Or, "Go easy dude. That's your 15th bong hit in 45 minutes!" "I gotta take advantage of the one night my parents can't do nothing about it."

I guess to buy into the story universe, we have assume that security measures and/or other considerations have made theft and other lesser crimes largely impractical. Probably also have to assume that the government actively promotes murder as the highlight of The Purge and does its best to rile people up to go on murderous rampages, to further what I assume is their population-control agenda.

I hope it explores why so many support a purge from a societal and political standpoint.

I'm enjoying it so far... But I am curious how they will keep the momentum going. We have more episodes to go before the night is over
I haven't seen "The first Purge". I'm wondering if the show does well if they will do more seasons. Or if this is it for the franchise.

It has been entertaining. I watch it each week and enjoy it. Still, the show is definitely a lower quality show. Some of the acting is poor and some of the writing is all over the place. Still, the mood and atmosphere of the show is good. I will tune in for the rest of the season.

One thing that I cannot stand is how the creators keep treating this show like it is so important. They talk about it like it is Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. I understand that it is their show and they have to talk it up, but it is getting ridiculous. I especially love how they say people HAVE to watch the show because of how relevant it is in "today's world." What the heck are they talking about?

My issue with the PURGE movies is that, according to them, most people deep down want to commit crimes but don't do it just because it's illegal. Yes, there are people like that, but the majority? No! We don't do it because we know it's wrong! And now we have a TV show, but James DeMonaco wrote himself into a corner. Continuing with this mentality would be illogical; not continuing with this mentality would be inconsistent to the franchise as a whole. Also, why expand this to the small screen while the movie series isn't over yet (supposedly)? World building? But the movies already tell stand-alone stories in different places with mostly different characters. All of that were my thoughts before watching the 1st season. I've seen it now and I was pleasantly surprised. The beginning was too slow. I don't wanna sound like someone with ADD who can't appreciate a slow-burn drama... but the movies are at their best when they embrace their exploitation roots. This was too self-serious and I don't even think it can be classified as action/horror like the movies (more like a dramatic thriller). It took 4 episodes for the crimes to get over-the-top. It even tried to be like LOST by showing flashbacks about 1 character per episode. However, the rest was much better. The characters got more interesting and the plot twists got unpredictable. The social commentary is still heavy-handed, though. I especially love how they say people HAVE to watch the show because of how relevant it is in "today's world." What the heck are they talking about? The entire franchise shows discrimination, people easily getting guns, the rich thinking that they're better than the poor, etc...
