Just saw Hold the Dark today. It was quite good. Not as good as Green Room (I loved Saulniers previous movies) and not as cinematic and gripping as Wind River (which was not by Saulnier but many people will be comparing the two, even though the book Hold the Dark came out couple years before the movie Wind River even went to production) but it was very good. Story of a wolf-expert investigating a presumed death of a child, set in Alaska, with some superb acting, lots of violence, many snowy nights and an interesting shoot out scene. If you dont want to /cannot see it on the big screen, you can stream it on Netflix as of today I think. But with its visual beauty it does deserve the silver screen. The director was present at the screening and said this was his biggest project both budget and overall scale for him, and that he really liked having Netflix as producers because they allowed him as much as creative freedom as he wanted. He also said that the head stabbing that appears in most if not all his movies is a pure coincidence, hehe:-) As always, the Blair brothers did music to his movie and as always it was great. If reminiscent of Taylor Sheridans movies, again… If i had not seen the magnificent work of Taylor Sheridan, I would have probably given this an 8. And while I know this was no derivative of Wind River, its so soon after its release that one simply cannot help but compare and inevitably …miss Wind Rivers power and beauty. But this was very good too. It was the first one Saulnier didnt write his own script for and it made me think he is best at directing his original material. But just for the acting itself it deserves to be seen. Alexander Skarskgaard and Jeffrey Wright were great as always, and Julian Black Antelope is an interesting "new find" for me. Solid 7/10 from me.

I dont have Netflix so I'll probably never get to watch this, but I will say the cinematography looks.....a bit too TV, Green Room and Blue Ruin had a more film like quality.

If you mean just the cinematography - I agree it was not as breathtaking as Ben Richardsons work on Wind River, but it was very fitting the big screen. if you mean the overall look and the production value that yeah, even though it was more than triple the budget of Green Room, it was no Avengers budget. But it really didnt feel as an annoyance at all to me.

Well I never got to see Wind River in cinemas, but it looked and felt vast on TV and cost roughly 11 million, this one looks less massive, not knocking the quality of the film, just the cinematography

Yes I agree this does not have that level of cinematography. But still its good

I was really anticipating this one and couldn't help but be a bit let down by it. LOVED both Green Room & Blue Ruin but most of this film fell flat for me and it didn't make much sense . I won't totally hold it against Saulnier as Jeremy does his best to salvage a lousy script (the film has its moments of some very creepy moments) . Did sorta like the ending at least .
Generous 6/10

Generous 6/10 yeah I agree compared to Green Room it was "worse". Why do you think the script was lousy and what didnt make much sense to you in the story? also, did you see Wind River and do you think that comparing the two could have been part of what brings the score on this movie down a bit? It was for me….

It was for me…. Main reason I thought the script was lousy is cause it was all over the place. Can't really put my finger on it but some of the so called "surprises " were too obvious . I saw many things coming a mile away . But keep in mind , the ending was definitely pretty ballsy so I'll give it that . Still love the hell out of Saulnier as a director and I believe he's directing some of the new True Detective episodes so hopefully thats good.
