Okay, I know you don't salute sergeants, at least not in the US military. (I was a buck sergeant at 19.) Let's name some actors who look like career sergeants or played memorable ones. I'll start with Victor McLaglen as an Irish-American sergeant and Harry Andrews as a British one. Man, do they look like NCOs! ( I sure as hell didn't.)

James Caan as Staff Sergeant Dohun in A BRIDGE TOO FAR. He was the coolest cat in the movie. (Is a Staff Sergeant like a regular Sergeant?)

A Staff Sergeant has three stripes and one rocker - one rank ahead of buck sergeant (a slang term, by the by), one rank below Sergeant First Class or Platoon Sergeant.

Sgt. Dana Andrews becomes a platoon leader unwillingly when his lieutenant and top sergeant are killed while landing in Italy and the third in command has a nervous breakdown in Lewis Milestone’s “A Walk In The Sun” (1945). Andy Griffith makes drill instruction Myron McCormick’s life miserable in “No Time For Sergeants” (1958). McCormick and Griffith (Don Knotts in the middle)

Am I imagining it, or did James Whitmore play a sergeant in every cavalry and war movie he was in?

In the memorable ending, Dane digs his own grave, literally, then sets up a machine gun in it for the last stand.

Am I imagining it, or did James Whitmore play a sergeant in every cavalry and war movie he was in? Well, he's a sergeant in Battleground.

I've been corrected regarding my initial post which says that Victor McLaglen is next to Henry Fonda in the Fort Apache still. It's Ward Bond. McLaglen plays a sergeant in Fort Apache though, and in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon as well.
