10/10. Edward Yang's epic masterpiece unfolds like a great novel and is a strong candidate for greatest film of the 1990s. I was overjoyed when Criterion finally released this - the barely acceptable bootleg print which had been kicking around for years was so much less than this film deserves.

9/10, great film, but pretty overwhelming. Will probably need a rewatch to really appreciate it. I actually think I liked Yi-Yi a little better.

I think A Brighter Summer Day might have just been too much to take in with one viewing. Yi-Yi is arelatively lighter film. It probably had the slight edge visually as well. All the bright bold colors (red, pink, green) compared to the all the browns and natural tones of ABSD.
