Tywin Lannister, S4E01: "The original weapon was absurdly large. Plenty of steel for two swords." Ned Stark's sword was a symbol for his unwieldy, impractical mentality. All looks, designed to impress, to intimidate, no real use and unreasonably expensive. It was an execution weapon. It could be used to behead someone while others agreed and watched, not in a fight. It was the expression of a fantasy, not the solution to a need. It was like Hobbes' Leviathan. History showed it does not fulfil its promise. Ned Stark was the head of wishful thinkers, of idealists who deny reality and have their followers pay the cost for it. He was the man who started a war for a principle. He was made to fall for it, which was a bold move on the writer's part. Then his sword was broken down and placed in Jaime's invisible hand. Now, I really wonder if that was an intended parallel.

Meh, it was a double handed sword used for a particular purpose.
Lannisters simply prefer puny swords.

Nothing wrong with a ceremonial sword. Tywin had a problem with it, so he should have stfu and not stolen it.
On a minor note, the Starks got New Ice around 400 years ago. The Targs sold a bunch of stuff and came to Westeros around 400 years ago. I wonder if the Targs sold New Ice to the Starks (and Longclaw to the Mormonts) on a discount when they came over. I don't see the Starks or Mormonts being able to afford Valyrian steel swords otherwise.

Tywin was a clever man with a responsible attitude towards resources. The Starks were dumb wasters, as collectivists always are. The idiots bought a symbol.

This is heavier than my new guitar (but not by much, that thing weighs almost 6Kg). And yes, I'm planning to hit several notes in a single strum with it
