On October 30th TCM is airing;
The Mysterious Island (1929) Doctor X (1932) The Return of Doctor X (1939) - Yes, this is Humphrey Bogart's only horror movie (to my knowledge) and I have been waiting years to see it.

The Return of Doctor X (1939, directed by Vincent Sherman) is a surprisingly entertaining mad scientist flick in which Humphrey Bogart plays a dead man walking. It is enjoyable, I might add, in a B-movie, second feature kind of way. Wayne Morris tops the cast as one of those fast talking devil-may-care reporters, you know, the kind who wears his fedora with the front brim turned up flat. Bogart, playing a back-from-the-dead executed killer with a taste for blood, is actually very good and presents a good example of how he could elevate such simplistic entertainment. I recommend it to one and all. Bogart, himself, however hated the film, believing (correctly) that he deserved “A” material. He later told an interviewer, “If it had been Jack or Harry Warner’s blood I wouldn’t have minded so much. The trouble was, they were drinking mine and I was making this stinking movie.” I have also recently seen 1932s “Doctor X.” With Michael Curtiz directing and headlining Fay Wray, Lionel Atwill, and Preston Foster, what could go wrong? An amazing (but implausible) climax that is actually pretty scary. Also recommended by moi. I plan on seeing The Mysterious Island (1929).

If they've run any promos for The Mysterious Island, I've missed them. Any indication of whether the copy they'll be running is from the lone Technicolor print (discovered in Prague five years ago)? TCM's website gives no hint.

I'll be looking in on it anyway, and just keeping my fingers crossed.

I love this time of year when TCM starts playing all the old, classic horror films and "creature double features." All this modern CGI/Gore-fest stuff just doesn't do it for me. Give me the classics, please!
