Anne Lockhart was John Carpenter's first choice for Laurie. I read in a Jamie Lee Curtis book that she didn't know she was even considered for it, as her agent never told her.
Ann Dusenberry was also being considered.
Sh-sh-sh-shaaaarrrrkk.

Just watched JLC on Eli Roth's History of Horror and she seemed to think her being cast hinged on her ability to play vulnerability and that she she was Janet Psycho Leigh's daughter.

At least she's honest. Though you'd really be delusional to think it had nothing to do with who your mom is when the lead character is named Sam Loomis.

She did a great job though-that vulnerability worked very well-especially in the closet scene. I wonder if she had been better looking, whether it would have undermined the suspense--making it seem more glamorous.
I am unfamiliar with Anne Lockhart, but I know Ann Dusenberry could do crazy scared well. But she seemed too pretty for what the role required.

I checked out an Anne Lockhart film performance.
I can see why Carpenter considered her (beyond the fact she is the daughter of a Hollywood actress). Her voice has a "weakling" quality to it (though the movie I checked out--Joy Ride-she is playing a role similar to JLC in TRADING PLACES).

I dont think she would have been good with the kids. Jamie Lee Curtis was good with the "Radioactive man, Tarantula Man.." scene...Hard to see AL being quirky enough based on what I observed with her performance and voice.
Ann Dusenberry--would have done better, I think she would have handled the fear stuff perfectly, the only question is whether she would have been convincing as the plain Jane. Ultimately of the three, I think JLC was the best choice even if the Psycho connection was a factor.

Jamie Lee has that face, she's lovely but kind of serious looking, even though we all know now she has a sense of humor, back then she was just so perfect for the awkward, virginal Laurie.
Speaking of awkward, having just finished rewatching the movie, what's up with Laurie's clothes at the start of the movie? That brown sweater, the granny skirt? No wonder Laurie couldn't get a date! Carpenter gave Curtis $100 to go out and buy Laurie's wardrobe so we can only blame her. Then again, it was the 70's...

Really? I know one of the contenders was Pamelyn Ferdin but she had done The Mephisto Waltz so was considered too familiar (so we hear).
