This movie would have been... interesting. Better than 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man? Maybe not. I'm sure this movie would have been more successful than the reboot financially, though, as the audience was familiar with the cast and Spider-Man 3 still remains the highest-grossing Spidey film. People really liked the Raimi films. Here are some details on what would have gone down in the unmade fourth chapter... brace yourselves.
- The villains would be the Vulture, played by John Malkovich, and the Black Cat, played by Anne Hathaway.
- Adrian Toomes (Vulture), would have replaced Jameson as Editor-In-Chief of the Daily Bugle. Jameson would later end up in a cubicle somewhere.
- Felicia Hardy would have some sort of familial relation to Toomes, and once Spider-Man killed him, she would become the Black Cat in order to avenge him.
- Peter and MJ would be married and have a baby girl. Pete cheats on MJ with Felicia, causing her to leave at the end of the film with their child. A disillusioned Pete would quit being Spider-Man, and that's how the movie would end.
And some BTS tidbits...
- Sony opted not to use fan-favorite villain Lizard, as they didn't think audiences would respond well to such a strange-looking villain. Ironic, as he's the villain they winded up using for the reboot.
- Sony gave Raimi a hard time about his choice of villain (Vulture), as they didn't think he was marketable enough. They reportedly wanted a THIRD villain to be brought in, who is rumored to have been Electro.
- The studio also wanted the Black Cat character to be changed into the "Vulturess", as they feared audiences would consider Black Cat to be a ripoff of DC Comics character Catwoman, who was being lined up for an appearance in Christopher Nolan's third Batman film.
- Three writers (James Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, and Gary Ross) were brought on to write the film, but Raimi hated all of their drafts and wanted Alvin Sargent, writer of the second and third Spider-Man films, to take a crack at the script. Sony had a release date set for the film, (May 6th, 2011) and did not want to do yet another rewrite, as this would further delay the film. As a result, Raimi left, and Tobey Maguire followed. Sony already had a reboot script written as a contingency plan, however, since they feared Raimi would depart the project.

Wow, does Raimi... secretly hate Spider-Man or something? It would certainly explain why Peter Parker's life is a never-ending festering cycle of misery for the entire film trilogy.

I've always said... if they had just made a good Spider-Man part 4, as good as they did part 1 and 2, then all would have been forgiven regarding part 3. But Nooooo!

Midnight's Edge on YouTube has a video about this. it's really interesting. The studio wanted to go darker and darker with each new entry and they wanted to make a ton of Spider-Man films and spinoff films.

Because if there's anything the Spider-Man films needed, it was to be more depressing.

Wow. That doesn't sound...y'know, good. I think. I'm not the biggest fan of the Amazing Spider-Man films, but things about the potential SM4 sound about as bad, if not worse. I was kind of hoping that if Raimi got another crack at Spider-Man, he would at least bring it back to the level of his first two movies. Or try to salvage the series and end on a high note...

I initially hated it but have softened considerably since upon repeat viewings. I now think it's "okay" and consider it a guilty pleasure. And, come to that, there's more heart and substance in any five minute block of freakin' Spider-Man 3, overblown and flawed though it was, than all of those sterile and terrible Andrew Garfield movies! (Can't speak for the new Disney version, as I've not seen Civil War and don't intend to see it or any of the solo Spidey films made by the House of Mouse short of like a Clockwork Orange-type setup where I'm strapped down and my eyes are forced open for hours on end.)

Sounds like a mess. Still, I'd take a mess that is original over that soulless rehash we got in 2012.

So after seeing Venom and Sandman, they thought audiences wouldn't suspend their disbelief over The Lizard ffs?

So after seeing Venom and Sandman, they thought audiences wouldn't suspend their disbelief over The Lizard ffs? I'm always baffled when studios get that attitude when it comes to superhero movies. You'd think the Christopher Reeve Superman films had no never existed the way studio executives acted towards the genre in the first decade of this century.

You'd think the Christopher Reeve Superman films had no never existed the way studio executives acted towards the genre in the first decade of this century. Me too. However, they'd been making Donner films for so long I think the studio was just trying to get past that by making Superman darker. Not that this is any excuse of course. I'm tired of seeing them make nothing except Donner films, but they could have done this by having a villain we'd never seen before and not rehashing his origin.
