Well, THAT was a fun bit of crazy from ever reliable Ken Russell. Outlandish combo of serious drama and campy horror. Amanda Donohoe is a standout as the sexy villainess.

Great fun, and it holds up to repeat viewings, may be Ken Russell's best Eighties picture, and that was a good decade for him. Wonderful, cast,--they really got into it--and I love the music. Lair Of The White Worm may be the most fun horror movie since the heyday of James Whale.

It had its moments, but IMO it was too weird. It was my first (and so far the only) Ken Russell's movie, so I didn't know what to expect. And I'm not sure if I'm going to like the rest of his films. But I have to admit that young Hugh Grant was hot.

Ken Russell really does bring out the unexpected. And Lair is no different. Really enjoyed its excessiveness.
Gotta love this quote about his film; "How on earth can you take seriously the vision of Catherine Oxenberg, dressed in Marks & Spencer's underwear, being sacrificed to a fake, phallic worm two hundred feet long?" - Ken Russell.

Seemed to be almost a stylistic homage to 1960s Hammer films, meaning the non-Frankenstein/Dracula ones like The Reptile, The Gorgon, Plague of the Zombies, etc.

The Hammer pictures tended to be conservative, staid even when they featured gore, while Russell's films tended to go every which way.
