THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1939) 5/5.
An adventure film full of mystery is the second instalment in the SHERLOCK HOLMES film series released between 1939 and 1946. The film is an adaptation of the 1899 play SHERLOCK HOLMES by William Gillette, though there is little resemblance between the plots. The screenplay was written by Edwin Blum and William Drake, based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the play written by William Gillette. The music was by Robert Russell Bennett and Cyril J Mockridge, the film was produced by Darryl F Zanuck and it was directed by Alfred L Werker.
THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson, Ida Lupino as Ann Brandon and George Zucco as Professor James Moriarty. It also features Alan Marshal, Terry Kilburn, Henry Stephenson, EE Clive, Arthur Hohl, Mary Forbes, Peter Willes and Mary Gordon as Mrs Hudson.
The plot follows the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Doctor Watson as they attempt to foil their archenemy Professor James Moriarty who targets a wealthy family and plots the theft of the Crown Jewels in Victorian London. The film continues on the fine work started in the first film and features one of my favourite versions of Professor James Moriarty, played with great effect by George Zucco. An excellent and entertaining film.

I hope you don’t mind if I post my reviews after yours, ant-mac … I like this one a lot too, though I prefer Hound (and a few later Universals)

I hope you don’t mind if I post my reviews after yours, ant-mac … I like this one a lot too, though I prefer Hound (and a few later Universals) I have to say Eric Porter is my absolute favourite when it comes to Professor James Moriarty, but George Zucco certainly comes a close second.
And I love all of the SHERLOCK HOLMES films from this series, but a few of them hold an extra special place in my heart.
This is one of them.
