"The Burke and Hare murders were a series of 16 killings committed over a period of about 10 months in 1828 in Edinburgh, Scotland. They were undertaken by William Burke and William Hare, who sold the corpses to Robert Knox for dissection at his anatomy lectures" Wikipedia. I've seen 4 of the 6 adaptations, and liked all four. Yep, even the most recent John Landis' comedy attempt on the story. Although I find it hard to pick between The Body Snatcher and The Flesh and the Fiends, but I went with the latter. The Body Snatcher is probably my favourite Val Lewton and Boris Karloff steals the show whenever on screen, but something about the performances of Donald Pleasence and George Rose are unsettling and Peter Cushing as Knox gives it solidarity. The Flesh and the Fiends just sticks with me more, and gets under my skin. What film would be your pick? Would anybody recommend "The Greed of William Heart" & "Burke & Hare 71"?

I've seen the same ones you have, I think, and I'd choose The Body Snatcher. Karloff serves class up the production and, as you said, steals every scene he's in. It's some of his best work, and any time Lugosi and Karloff are in the same film I'm interested I'm giving it a shot. I liked the sets and the tone a good deal, and the whole thing plays out a nice, brisk pace.
I liked Flesh of the Fiends as well, I rated then the same, but if I had to choose one I have to go with Karloff. Even though the cast is top notch in both versions, Karloff's charm carries it over the top for me. I do wish the real names were used though. I know they it's based on a short story and it's not really historically accurate, but the names are very evocative.
I also kinda liked the John Landis movie. It's not great, but the cast is solid, it strikes a nice tone for a silly but grizzly black comedy, and it looks nice and is shot well even if it has a cheapness to it. I dont know if people didn't like it or just ignored it, but I'd never even heard of it until it had already gone to cable, and I enjoyed the experience.

Yeah, “The Body Snatcher” does keep it zippy and gripping, and Karloff is a large factor to that. Great use of sound and shadows, especially in its suggestion of violence. And a great ending too. Of the four I’ve seen, I would say all of them were well cast in their roles. I was the same too, regarding Landis’ film. Came across it by accident on cable one night, and enjoyed it. Surprisingly so, since Landis last few films were majorly poor. Although I hadn’t seen his Masters of Horror contribution.

I havent seen any, or heard of the actual murders for that matter. But with that cast (Karloff, Cushing, and Pleasence in one movie?) I'll definitely be checking out The Body Snatcher.
Edit: oh, misread. Well, 2 out of the 3 ain't bad.

I watched the recent-ish Simon Pegg/Andy Serkis 'Burke and Hare' one last night.
Flat out comedy retelling... Very enjoyable actually, I liked it. Almost felt like a musical. Kept expecting people to break in to song.
7/10
