So X-Men 1 was famous for its pure grounded and serious non colorful appearance. Batman followed the same pattern after the ill fated batman and robin. I notice both movies made jokes about the ridiculousness of costumes
Bruce: Guy dresses up as Bat, clearly has issues
Cyclops: what were you expecting. yellow spandex
Also just to mention the cinematography of both films. they sure dont look cartoonish. the dark to little colour looks was done on purpose.
Does anyone find it funny or ironic that of all the comic movie series. the two series that made jokes about how idiotic it is to were spandex and bat costumes ended making the best and most serious compelling comic books ever made? TDK. LOGAN, X2, DOFP, X-MEN 1, TDKR both for marvel and dc.
It just made think seeeing how MCU fans are so obsessed with costumes.
oh and these movie do have jokes, this stuff is a joke in the film does not mean the entire movie is a joke.
costumes....in a suppose real world.
Out of the 3 videos I dont need to say which looks the most childish.

The Avengers one only looks bad because of Captain Americas silly outfit. If he had the one from Winter Soldier or First Avenger which was a more darkened, military style version the shot would look a lot better. Cant really change Ironmans or Thors suit, Black Widow/Hawkeye has black leather and Hulk is naturally green.
Cinematography is cartoony though, blame Whedon.

Reality flash: Yellow spandex actually allows you to fight and move better than tight, restrictive black leather.

It was meant to look silly because the fanboy Coulson made it. Says so in the movie. And I don't think Black Widow and Hawkeye's uniforms are leather. They have leather in them, though.

I can't believe I didn't realize how bad that Captain America costume was.
They really improved it with the later movies.

Like I said before: If you take what is going on in the movie seriously and act like it belongs, then the audience will take it seriously and act like it belongs. This is a world where there can fly around in a bright red cape and alien armor. Cap can run around in a bright blue suit. Spider-man swinging around in a red and blue/black suit. And no one will bat an eye. The audience will accept it because of that. They believe in that world. But when you have a movie where they call attention to how silly it is to wear yellow spandex (none of them wore spandex in any of these 3 movies) then the audience will be taken out of it when they characters where restrictive leather with yellow piping. And Bruce was distancing himself from Batman by saying that wearing the Batman costume makes the person insane. He was playing to the crowd in movie. Not making a commentary about how wearing the costume is stupid. Only in the X-men movie do they say it as a joke and then wink at the crowd.
Also...
This shows you how bad making the X-men uniforms like that are. Also, remember that they had to totally redo Batman's costume for TDK because of how restrictive it was. And they say so in the movie.

What are you talking about!! Again...what!!!!!!!! There area few jokes in the MCU about their costumes/look...usually made by others at the heroes expense. Stak calling Thor Shakespeare In The Park for instance

I think the lesson is learned. great intellectual comic movies are not defined by costumes. avengers does not fit the intellectual comic movies description, the notion that it is silly is what has destroyed the reputation of mcu movies
also the cartoony look of avengers is over the top but like that mcu is empty video said, the movie has one purpose... to sell toys.

- the difference between the costume joke in xmen 1 and batman begins is to send a message this is adult grounded stuff here. also see how their movies are less colorful?

If MCU made batman they will force him to were grey colours and boxer outside and will make his costumes bright to attract kids to sell toys. Nolan was having none of that.
Raimi Spiderman suit was grounded, it is not as cartoonish as homecoming.
Lastly bruce was not distancing himself from batman, he was admitting the ridiculousness of a guy dressing up as a bat because his movie was grounded. in the sequel Joker mentions how silly it is. but the story telling upgrades those films because bruce had to give a real reason for why he dresses up as bat. to take away the silliness of it.
A restrictive batman suit does not mean a colorful batman suits of bat nipples.
the audience can accept some things that cant be changed but they can also accept that live action things will be toned down to make the movie more serious and not too obsessed with the kids market. that was the approach of xmen and batman movies. mcu does not use that approach that is the differnce.
check out the posters. no colorful costumes.

you make a good point there. The costumes in the Averngers scene have not aged gracefully, especially Captain America's and Thor's. Same with the CGI characters.
I bet the only costumes that will look acceptable in a few years will be Hawkeye and Black Widow's. Why? Because they are as classic as they are generic: black leather just accentuating the human figure. That never gets out of fashion.

Because they are as classic as they are generic: black leather just accentuating the human figure. That never gets out of fashion. Why do you think they change the uniforms every movie? And before you say it: they change the uniforms and costumes in each of the X-men and Batman movies, also. The problem with the X-men ones is that they are matte black so you can't tell what is going on with them.
Rule #3 of costume design: If your actors complain about them constantly, then you are doing it wrong. They continually complain about the Batsuit until maybe TDK where they finally streamlined it. They had to create a subplot for Mystique because JLaw complained about it. As seen in that video above, the actors in X-men complained about not being able to move... in a movie where they are suppose to do action scenes. No wonder the action scenes in the X-men movies feel so static.
Also... Gonna put this here again.

Why does the Raimi Spider-Man suit get a pass? It's just as colorful and cartoonish (as you say) as anything in the MCU. It would fit right in.

Raimi's style is one of the corniest. Then you also have the dated CGI they claim is in the MCU that was dated when Raimi's Spider-man came out.

Colorful costumes are a key part of the genre. If you don't like colorful costumes then don't make superhero movies.
