More unrelenting horror from Eli Roth, The Green Inferno is a tribute to the Italian cannibal horror movies of the early 80s (Dr. Butcher M.D. immediately came to mind as I was watching this). A group of enviromental activists get a lot more than what they bargained for when they stage a protest in the Amazon Jungle, and run afoul of a cannibalistic tribe.
Roth has actually crafted an interesting story that's peppered with well-developed characters. There is a heavy emphasis on "millennialism" throughout, in that there is the constant use of smart phones and selfies, plus a cynical worldview. Some clever plot devices include the use of pot and a "flute necklace".
As you would expect from Roth, this is pretty much torture porn and there are some incredibly brutal and graphic scenes. This will definitely satisfy hardcore horror fans to the max. And the plane crash was quite the amazing set piece.

Much like Cabin Fever and parts of the Hostel films, this one is let down by Roth's brand of juvenile, atmosphere-destroying humor. The guy would be a very effective horror filmmaker if he left out the dumb jokes. Or very effective straight to video National Lampoon director if he left out the horror...

Cabin Fever is the only movie of his that I thought was good, but it would have been better without the juvenile humor which seems forced and out of place.
I thought Green Inferno was too tame. Roth seems to never want to go full bore and be as violent and gory as he can be in movies that are basically just gimmicks with little story and stereotypical characters.

Roth has actually crafted an interesting story that's peppered with well-developed characters. Well, I definitely cannot agree there. I commend him for getting an Italian cannibal style movie made and into theaters today, but this is just another massive disappointment from Eli Roth in my eyes. It started off as a very right wing conservative view of sort of 'key board warrior' type activists, which was sort of an interesting place to start, in a way. And then it devolved into like 90 mins of nothing but gore effects. It was certainly brutal and gruesome, but was really more hollow and boring than anything else. He hires good effects guys, but he has no deftness for displaying this stuff. He seems to be more willing to go to this extreme than any other main stream director, but in terms of crafting an effective sequence, he always leaves me wishing he'd been better at executing his ideas. And then some girl has diarrhea in the corner of their little cage. I guess that was supposed to be funny? Or gross just for the sake of it? Then it comes to the end. And that was the first time it took a turn that I found even somewhat interesting or thought provoking in any way. If it had included more character or story turns like that maybe it could have held my interest.

I've yet to see this. On a related note wasn't there some controversy that reeulted in a long delay in the releasing of the film. I'm vaguely remembering something about that.

I'm not entirely sure, but I thought it was more of a legal/financial issue that caused a delay rather than anything to do with the content.

Eli Roth seems determined not to let his movies get too grim and nasty. Pity. Visually, I did like the red body paint on the locals. Ok.

Of course horror sites often play up any angle they can get to get clicks.

I think you might have been high when you were watching this, and are confusing the good feeling of being high with this movie having ANY quality at all. In fact, this may be one of the worst movies I have ever had the displeasure of seeing 45 minutes of.

I think you might have been high when you were watching this, and are confusing the good feeling of being high with this movie having ANY quality at all. In fact, this may be one of the worst movies I have ever had the displeasure of seeing 45 minutes of. Why? Besides being incredibly culturally insensitive its also moronic, silly, and confuses gore with any actual scares. It's like a junior high schooler made their version of a horror flick with a crew of junior high schoolers... after sniffing glue. I literally have seen better short films on YouTube.
The performances are awful, the dialog is terrible, the circumstances the characters are put through are stupid, as are their reactions to said circumstances, and when the raison d'etre (the movies very reason for being) arrives, cannibalism, the fx/makeup are so corny looking it defeats the whole purpose. In other words it even fails at being a gross out movie. Even the cinematography looks like it was film school level at best.
Its really an awful movie, and not because it shot for gold and failed, but because it shot for shit and still failed.
Eli Roth is riding the coattails of one success, Cabin Fever, and has yet to show that he has any more talent than that one flash in the pan. There are some truly great horror movies out there. Eli Roth has made none of them.
Recent recommendations are The Witch and Hereditary; slow burns with deep creepy vibes, great performances, and real scares.
