You mean Herve Villechaise's Tattoo wasn't horrifying enough?

The article only mentions "Fantasy Island". *spoilers?* It doesn't sound like the guests would be in purgatory. But who knows. Might be a last minute twist. The guests having died on the Plane crash before reaching the Island.

The guests having died on the Plane crash before reaching the Island. I have not seen that tv movie mentioned as inspiration for Fantasy Island (although the series did have supernatural elements and Ricardo Montalban said he considered Roarke a fallen angel of some kind). However I remember seeing it a long time ago and thinking it was the pilot for Fantasy Island.

Michael Pena isn't scary though. A Wrinkle in Time proved that.
Now you got Pedro Pascal or Javier Bardem to play Roarke, they might have something there.

To make it more horrific wouldn't take much. Watching it all years ago, I just assumed Rourke was Satan, and that it would be revealed in the final episode, and Tattoo was his imp.

If you have ever seen the original TV movie on youtube or elsewhere, Rourke seemed much more sinister from the jovial dapper host he was on the TV show.

Until you mentioned that, I had completely forgotten that he was quite the one bring torment to the fantasy seekers in the movie vs the series, but you are absolutely correct. I need to see that original movie again! Thanks for awakening that little recess of my 11 year old self!
