I remember liking the teaser trailer and am a fan of steampunk fiction. But the main trailer they began talking and then it made it just a rental for me. I'm sure it'd look great on IMAX or is it not getting that?

Like the Hobbit movies, Mortal Engines is a relentless assault of CGI and earsplitting noise.

" It slides in just under the wire to shoot almost to the top of the list of the worst films of 2018 and will be remembered by me personally as one of the most excruciatingly boring and confounding times I’ve ever had in a cinema."
OUCH!

I'm sure it'd look great on IMAX or is it not getting that? I saw it on a regular screen, it does look good but it really has nothing else to offer. It's as generic and bland has you expect.
4/10 for me.

I remember Jackson wanting to adapt a fantasy series I was really into called Temeraire (Historical fantasy where Napoleonic Wars are fought with dragons-fukking awesome). Between this and the Hobbit movies, thank G. O. D. he dropped out of it.

Universal/Media Rights Capital’s Mortal Engines also started its engines last night from 7 PM shows, making only $675,000 from 2,600 locations — a disaster for film that the production claims cost $100M+ but which rival financiers say is higher (around $150M). How bad is that number? Well, Universal made more money from its Legendary bombs Warcraft and The Great Wall on their preview nights with $3.1M and $970K, respectively. Versus other sci-fi bombs, Mortal Engines made less than Warner Bros’ Jupiter Ascending ($975K) and EuropaCorp’s Valerian ($1.7M). This Peter Jackson/WingNut produced sci-fi fantasy film is expected to sputter out with $8M-$11M over three days. Why can we bank on that number? Because Thursday exits were not good at 62% positive and two and a half stars and a low 40% definite recommend for this two-hour and eight minute pic.

oh god this was bad. incredibly bad. walked out after about 80 minutes. combination of incredibly stupid and boring is deadly. i guess i missed the unintentionally hysterical ending but it was just too much to take. somehow it had all the negative stuff about Jackson and none of the positive.

Whoa seriously? yeah, i only do that every twenty movies or so where i feel staying would require too much mental strength and suffering of boredom or otherwise so i go, but never sooner than an hour to make sure i give the movie a fair chance. and of course i dont publish reviews for movies i have not seen in its entirety.

I saw it today and I went in with very low expectations given the reviews but I actually liked it. It's not great but it's a good fantasy adventure movie aimed mostly at younger audiences. The cast is fine, the VFX are good, it gets quite emotional at times, some of the action scenes were quite good. The story is average for this type of fantasy movie. The steam punk tech is pretty cool.
So, overall, I don't think it deserves all the hate it is getting. Some of those reviews are total nonsense. It seems like some of the critics just want to come up with the cleverest insult regardless of what's actually in the movie.
