In an ideal world it wouldn't matter if the president were religious. I only wish this was the worst defect that Trump had, but there are other things about him that are far worse.

It's strange because not only did he not read it, but look at the expression on his face. He almost looks "defiant" and possibly disgusted by the idea of him reading it. I'm not sure if that has to do with the fact that he doesn't know it, or doesn't care to know it, or that he resents having to sit next to the Obamas, or perhaps because of his disdain for the Bush family and having to pretend to be respectful to George HW Bush. It could be any number of reasons, but from an optics point of view it looks really bad. Especially when compared to the other Presidents and other First Ladies sitting nearby. Even Vice President Pence was reading it.

I wouldn't read it either but I wouldn't run a campaign pretending to value it's virtues or beliefs.

He heard they were gonna read the Apostle's Creed and said "OK and I'll read Rocky".

I wouldn't read it either but I wouldn't run a campaign pretending to value it's virtues or beliefs. Why, because it has a Trinitarian construction? This shouldn't bother Trump as he ckaims to be Presbyterian.

The guy is a spastic douche what do you expect At this point, President Trump’s behavior is exactly what I would expect from him. Nothing he does surprise me anymore, and it really shouldn’t surprise anyone because he’s told us (shown us) who he is as a person. Anyone who claims to be surprised by his actions lives in their own world of denial.

I wouldn’t see the point and there is a danger of it being against my beliefs so why take the chance? As a politician Trump has a higher requirement of interfaith diplomacy than I do, but even without it, he should recognize who he campaigned to. That said, I think this is a case of people looking for something outrageous. He shouldn’t be admired for behaving himself but he may literally not know protocol and I would be shocked if he paid attention.

You don't know whether or not The Apostle's Creed is against your religious beliefs? I have Mormon friends who would not recite it because their church teaches against the use of such creeds. This one makes them uncomfortable due to the Trinitarian sounding construction.

However, it is specifically a statement of particular beliefs so there's no reason for me to read it as if in agreement or as a sign of respect. I've never even seen it read at a funeral service.

This is the sort of criticism of Trump that doesn't really matter. I never bought that Trump was a devout Christian so I don't really care
If anything it's his base of Evangelicals that should be concerned.

I've been an atheist for decades and can still recite, from memory, the Nicene Creed, the Apostles Creed, The Lord's Prayer and any number of hymns. I'm surprised Pence had to even look at the program. RED FLAG, here, Evangelical base, your 'president sent from God' is a fake. A common snake-oil salesman that isn't even very good at it. In my personal opinion, his pouty look is because 1. he's offended that God is getting so much attention, 2. he's offended that HW is being talked about in such a revered manner, and 3. he's contemplating what the heck are they going to say about him when his funeral comes along?

If he hadn't grotesquely courted the evangelicals the optics would be different. If those like Cody hadn't slashed Obama's Christianity and yet remain silent on trump's irreverence... the optics would be different.
