I guess I meant to direct the question to @tristan's Journal. I will definitely watch it again, for the cinematography and imaginative world building alone. However, I would strongly disagree with this being "the best since TDK", it's too play-it-save and broad for that IMO. I vastly prefer stuff like Watchmen or WW for their narrative substance. But if you are into adventures rides like Raiders, Avatar & Co this might be the apotheosis of DC films for some.

Here’s to an RT score in the 50s, I guess... Nah. Iron Man 3 got an 80% RT rating and Iron man 2 got a 73% RT rating - Aquaman is a similar level of pap. I don't see it getting lower than 75% with an average score of 65%.
It's not horrible. It's just...meh.

The scene on the roof tops with Aquaman, Mera, Black Manta and a few Atlantians is well shot and shows Wan at his best, but then again, you have seen most of that already in the trailers. There is nothing else worth talking about - the rest of the action is all sub MCU.

You do not get another "warehouse fight" or sth iconic as Nomans-land land - but sometimes it's close (eg the "flare dive" scene, or the Italian roof-run in the trailer or final battle). Choreography is solid to great; lot of DCEU-slow motion in essential moments. Aqua actually gets his ass kicked a lot. Some of the photography and long shots action scenes are borderline genius. So, technically I would say it it sets new highs in the DCEU.

It's a solid film, 8/10. A couple of song choices took me out of the film. It looks amazing, so well done to VFX and cinematography. It is kind of derivative, like you said. Those movies, maybe pirates of the caribbean and Wonder Woman itself too. At least it's not as derivative (E.T.) as Bumblebee which is also a solid film apparently. Aquaman's story was fine, romance felt a little forced eating flowers was weird and that scene in the middle of the battle made me roll my eyes. Villains were ok. Humor was hit and miss, definitely not laugh out loud funny

Abridged version. Spin deleted. The storyline can be spoiled by watching the trailers. A CGI-fest Lots of bright shinny colors. Slow start. Too long. Excellent toy potential. Predictable. Nothing special. Toilet humor. Paper thin, shallow, derivative story. Main villain is just a foil for the heroes. Annoying music. Adequate acting. Should be a winner with the dumb masses. Close to a masterpiece. Sounds like a DC “masterpiece”!? So basically, you haven't seen it and your post is useless. Keep it up, Bundy!

(i). Cinematography and art design: "naturally" a very CGI-laden film but breathtaking at times (especially underwater sequences like the enter-Atlantis scene or the "flare"-dive horror scene or the final underwater battle). Underwater and surface scenes do not clash visually as both have this comic book-y, oil painting-eque look to them. Fun fact: DC has them actually smooch again during a battle - but, goodness, it's beautifully composed and shot. One of the best use of colors in a long time (especially fire & ice red and blue tones); some action scene consist of one (fake) long camera take - direction & photography mastery. (ii) Pacing: Brisk but not rushed. Movie starts a bit slow with a lot of backstories. The runtime (without credits) is around 2h10min which is long. (iii) Worldbuilding execution: Very well done and imaginative: Phantom Menace meets Avatar meets Tron - thus creating a mythological underworld of it's own with creative design (I want one of those fish-crafts they navigate as toy or as lego). Underwater premise with talking humanoids is silly and campy but executed well, this could have broken the movie (never done successfully before this film). (iv) Screenplay: quite predictable hero's journey and chase adventure. Essentially a "Something, Something...trident" as Aqua says. But there are a few surprises and twists. The dialogue is solid but nothing special. The new underwater mythology is a nice addition to the canon. This is not an traditional origin movie per se - Aqua is in full hero swing from the beginning but there are a few childhood flashbacks a la MoS. (v) Humor: persistent but never too overbearing; tone is pretty consistent. Lighter that WW, BvS or MoS. Like the first Raiders. Some silly 80s one liners. There is actually a good "toilet" joke if there ever was one (with an actual toilet) (vi) Story Substance: paper thin or should I say shallow? Water pollution is rather a plot device to motivate the villains than a developed narrative message. This is not as thoughtful and deep as other DC films. (vii) Villains: Fine: Main villain is well written (not too overwritten) and has some character twists, but in the end he's just a foil for the heroes. Black Mantis is kewl, well motivated and effective - but it takes forever until he gets his iconic suit and HELMET!!!!1 (but at least they give it to him). (viii) Score and Licensed Music: Composed score is solid to good: Mostly orchestral with some electronic cues (that strangely fit). Themes and Leitmotives are simple but effective eg villain motive, nice hero and love theme - really augments the hero journey moments especially at the end. Licensed music: can get ANNOYING, around the 100min mark they play 3 pop songs (very shortly) destroying some scene atmosphere IMO. Eg a nice DepecheMode song when a villain develops a laser device, but just the verse not the chorus. (ix) Acting: Fine and adequate. J Momoas best and most charismatic performance I've seen (he's not just a grunting brute here but a bit of a clumsy idiot and sometimes a-hole [arc]); A Heard as Mera is good; their chemistry together is fun. Not as deep and (arc)-consequential as in WW but that comes with the tone. Others all do a fine job, including the two main villain. I liked that they allowed a black actor oppose the whites as the vindictive bad guy in this PC-nervous day and age. (x) Comic accuracy: Don't care. First Conclusions: Close to a masterpiece with haunting cinematography. Unique enough that it might become a classic despite the derivative story. This should be a winner with the broad masses. Let's wait and see. I was going to write a long review similar to this one, expounding on just how much this movie fucking rocked! As you can see I really enjoyed it! But this review, which I agree with, covers it all, so I'll just amend a few points...
(i) Cinematography- this ones hard for me because so much of it was cgi and I consider that to be a triumph of SFX as opposed to photography. But... Art design - Holy shit! Forget about Avatar and Star Wars. This thing was off the hook! Yes, its cgi heavy, but it all looked so cool that you buy it! From ancient ruins, to ultra futuristic cities, to underwater worlds! James Wan should direct a Star Wars movie!
(viii) Music/soundtrack: disagree. I thought the soundtrack was all over the place, not focused at all. There is a hero theme and a villain theme and those were good. The above mentioned Depeche Mode song was the only one that worked of the pop songs in there. Everything else music wise was a bit too unfocused IMO.
(x) Comic accuracy: was over the top awesome! Atlanna was there! Mera was there! The Trench are there! Dr. Shin was there! Black Manta and his father were there! Atlantis as a greater world than just one sunken city was there! And the gold and green costume was there! Awesome!
Finally, I also disagree that the trailers give too much away. There are snippets from throughout the movie, but there's so much more!
Overall this was a "throw everything and the kitchen sink at the wall and see if its sticks" kinda movie, and guess what? 99% sticks! Go see this movie on Imax and enjoy.

Here’s to an RT score in the 50s, I guess... If the RT score on this movie drops to 50 then RT is an even beiger pile of shit than I already think it is. This movie was good!
