SMALLFOOT has good performances and original songs, but there are many jokes that you see coming from a mile away and/or jokes that will be dated a couple of years from now. Mainstream animated movies with social commentary tend to simplify things for the audience, especially by adding a villain even if it's not necessary. I'm relieved that script writers Karey Kirkpatrick, Clare Sera, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa restrained themselves and didn't add one. Too bad they only restrain themselves in that aspect, because the allegories are too obvious and the message delivery is too heavy-handed. There's a problem with the character DORGLE. He and MIGO (the protagonist) seem to have a "Neighborhood kid and elderly store clerk who sometimes gives advices" type of friendship... even though they're supposed to be father and son. It's not something that ruins the plot since his role isn't big enough, but it's distracting. 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

I saw towards the end of last year and had similar feelings. There were a couple of humorous jokes like putting him on the fire to warm him up and giving him an apple to eat. And the under pressure ad lib was entertaining. But I didn't have much connection to any of the characters and none of them felt particularly unique. Also, the film doesn't quite have the right blend of comedy and drama until the later parts of the movie. Another thing that I wish that they had done is hire people with more interesting voices instead of big name actors. The ending was pretty good and saves it from being a bad movie to a degree but I couldn't get over that the movie felt just a little too 'manufactured'.
