So I jumped right into this one without watching Book of Shadows since this is like more of a true continuation. (It was on my Netflix so it was convenient that way.) It’s just okay I think. The original Blair Witch Project is way better though since its littleness meant a lot to adapt the creep factor. This one is just all out horror and batshit insanity that ensues. It doesn’t even feel like a found-footage movie at times because it’s basically put together and structured like any other ordinary film. Which is a sin since these types of movies should NOT have this effect. They’re supposed to make you piece out scenes and put them together with your own imagination to tell what’s happening. Also, I thought the search for Heather plot was retarded. She’s been gone for 15 years and only NOW you go looking for her? I will say the good aspects are the acting is surprisingly solid, it has a palpable sense of dread, and the scares are well executed. So, I still enjoy it but it’s by no means a very good movie. 6/10

But it is not without its effective moments, so it's OK.

I thought it was very weak. The whole idea that this was the little brother hardly works at all from a logic or timeline standpoint, the whole attempt at recreating the confusion of the characters toward the end is forced and ineffective, the characters and performances aren't nearly as engaging or believable as in the original, and the new approach to having more cameras and coverage came off like a cheap gimmick and doesn't feel natural.
And then at the end they show the fucking Witch. That's like a mortal sin for this material.
I found it to be below average and just another weak ripoff of The Blair Witch Project. As far as the glut of numerous, bland found footage horror movies go I'd say this one was below average.
4/10

It goes against the original’s intent, by not showing anything leaving to the imagination.

also in the dvd commentary. Thanks for responding. I don't know what to make of this development. I think it makes less sense that they are being chased by a victim of the witch but the movie itself was a bit of a mess anyway.

Watchable but forgettable. I think going in a completely different direction for Book of Shadows was the only possible route, even as muddled as it was. The 2016 film just felt like a slick update of the original that misses the whole vibe, atmosphere and point of the original. 4/10
