In ancient Egypt or today, but I'm more curious about today.
I have google, but sometimes a search has to develop to get full results.
I seem to remember in my early education that it was associated with the sun by Tutankhamen and his new cult, but google was weak on that.

Without Googling... I think that it is the Egyptian symbol for "Life".. or "Rebirth".

The Wikipedia article delves into ancient and modern aspects, and some nice pictures, like this one from the tomb of Tutankhamen.

Without Googling... I think that it is the Egyptian symbol for "Life".. or "Rebirth". I think Tutankhamen started his own "religion" (that really irritated the priesthood) that worshiped life and the sun as the source of life. The circle (oval) at the top of the ankh was the sun and the three lines were rays. It did not last long after his death because the priesthood wanted the old gods back, but use of the ankh as a religious "item" of sorts continued as it pervaded much art. Edit > see the final edit In modern times it has been used as a symbol for the women's rights movement. The symbol for female used on this board is similar, but not a sun with rays. It has most recently been used as a symbol of black culture.

Akhenaten (who ruled roughly from 1353-1336 BCE) was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty who drastically changed Egyptian civilization. Originally crowned as Amenhotep IV, the pharaoh became a devout follower of the Egyptian sun-disk god Aten, eventually declaring Aten to be the only god in Egypt.
The cult may have been initiated by his father Amenhotep III with his mother Queen Tiye.
Note the sun rays with ankhs. Tutankhaten, later Tutankhamen did not found this monotheistic movement.

I stand corrected. Tutankhamun was the son who helped undo the work of his father based on advice from the priesthood. I guess. Final edit > Thanks maya55555 for your help which has always been with well established information. I am sorry I have mixed up the names and dates along the way, Aj_June. It was as you say, Amenhotep IV who started the new religion, changed his name to Akhnaton, and it was his son Tutankamun who was led to restore the priestly order.

I have located some corroborating material that Queen Tiye probably helped foster Amenhotep's interests in Aton. I knew it was around here somewhere. It would be great to get the whole story in one website.
