Thought Godzilla was a 'cool' monster as a kid - but to call a spade a spade I never had any clue what was going on and just found it enjoyable to see Godzilla crush things.
There's been 'mini' marathons on IFC.
Mothra vs. Godzilla on now and Terror of Mechagodzilla up next.
I find these incredibly difficult to get through and am about to give up (these lil babies aren't exactly masterpieces like the King Kong movies) and if Godzilla isn't stomping on things I find them pretty painful to watch. Trying to get geared up for Kong vs. Godzilla next year.
Godzilla good or bad? Thought he was 'good'? In this movie - why are they attacking him - thought he was a 'protector' so to speak - i.e the way he's been billed a bit in the latest American movies.
Who's 'good' and 'bad' - i.e. Mothra, Mechagodzilla, the 3 headed monster one, Rodan, etc etc.
And what order do these movies go in?
Cheers!

Hi Well it's always a 50/50 pull on where you want Godzilla to be - do you want the big atomic lizard as a protector of mankind laying waste to monster enemies? Or do you want him "stomping" down on mankind where it's the enemy? Godzilla as a franchise offers up both sides of the coin. That's pretty much the crux of the division matter with Godzilla. What you want yourself? Answer that then you have to choose your Zilla movies wisely.

Thanks for the response.
Guess it depends on my mood and what type of movie I'm watching.
Consider myself a positive person and a 'glass half full' type of guy - love an underdog story and root for 'good'; however when talking about horror movies/monster movies - I tend to root for the bad guy if that makes any sense at all.
Even in the slasher genre - I don't want to see Michael, Freddy, Jason, Pinhead, Leatherface, etc taken down.....
So I guess you can say I want 'Evil Godzilla' - 'Bad Godzilla' who is just a destructive monster on a rampage destroying everything in his sight.
Where do you think they're going with the new Kong vs. Godzilla. Will this be good vs. evil - a Batman vs. Superman? An Alien Vs. Predator? Freddy vs. Jason?
I'm guessing it's going to be two sympathetic monsters - one is brought in to take down the other as civilization feels they are at risk by presence of one and they pit the two against each other to destroy each other.

I grew up with Godzilla movies although I have not seen any after Godzilla 1985 (excluding Godzilla 98 which I don't think truly counts as it is American). I think Terror of Mechagodzilla I saw in a drive-in. I will revisit it one of these years.
I have run through the ones I have seen and never seen.
I saw Son of Godzilla for the first time about a year ago.
I believe the first era ends with DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (which I did not get to see until recently, and this year I plan to watch the AIP version for the first time--I was unaware there was a separate international dub--that was the one I had watched previously). After that it's Godzilla's Revenge, then Smog Monster (both I have seen before).
I don't want an evil Godzilla although I see him more as a giant animal with a bad temper and because he is so big he can do what he pleases. Generally, I dont see him defending humanity, if another monster shows up for him to fight its because he wants turf control.
I haven't not watch any of the newer ones though--that will be a strange experience if I do given how many there are.
BTW there is an annual Godzilla convention. I heard that they have a room with fake buildings and you can dress up in a monster costume and film yourself smashing through it or fighting someone else in a monster costume!

kong or Godzilla?
or is it a cop-out and prelude to a sequel.
I like the way you described your 'ideal' Godzilla - he pretty much doesn't give a sh*t and neither good or bad and his attitude is 'get out my way' and 'leave me alone' this world is mine

Oh haha I don't really see them as counting as official since they are American in production and I think the scale between official Kong and Godzilla makes a true matchup impossible. I think its a mistake to do a remake of the original. I suspect it will be a draw of some kind or they may favor Godzilla a little bit more.
Interesting thing though is that when the original King Kong vs Godzilla was made Godzilla was not seen as Japan's champion. He was much more of a bad guy. By the time of King Ghidorah and Monster Zero that has changed.

The original Kong would only go up to Godzilla's ankles.
The 60s version-well the Kong is that was so incredibly ugly, Godzilla wins just on looks.

Kongers was swimming away in victory on to greener pastures
below is the Japanese version where they craftily put 'Zillas 'roar' at the end - kind of like FvJ - how Freddy's head 'winked'; however we all know who won that battle too

Well Godzilla may have just gone to sleep since he can live underwater. Maybe Kong was fleeing.
Anyway the problem is that King Kong is actually pint sized. They had to come up with an excuse to change his height which means they cheated. The original Godzilla is under no threat from the original Kong.
Such a match up could never truly work because they have to change one of the characters.

However Apes are far more intellectual than lizards.
Agile too.
Ever hear of David vs. Goliath? We always see the 'little guy' win in sports - sometimes craftiness, brains and skills beats a slow lumbering oaf

Goliath didn't have radioactive breath. I am a Kong man myself but I know when a battle is lost. Kong cannot win against Godzilla. And Godzilla keeps coming back for movies. Kong fell off a building and died for good. Godzilla still wins.

For someone with "frog" in your name, your lack of solidarity with the reptilian side is surprising.
