What is UK copyright law? How far back does it travel? I've always appreciated the archive for some of the really ancient (well, 100+ year) books that are listed there.

At the risk of being "stupid", let me ask another question:
Why can I go to the library and borrow a book by a British author, but can't borrow a digital file?
Seems like the British authors need to come out of the 19th century.

Seems like the British authors need to come out of the 19th century. You can borrow a digital file from a British library. And the author gets a small payment if the book is still under copyright. But not with Open Library - it's essentially stealing.

Word are words... I don't see why digital is different than paper. Borrow a book, borrow a file. Also, since when does British law apply in American? (Didn't we fight a revolution over this?)
Once upon a time copyright, I think, used to be seven years. Not 70+! And I'm pretty sure in Shakespeare's time copyright didn't exist at all; and people still wrote stuff. Thomas Kyd couldn't sue the Bard for stealing Hamlet.
