what a treat this movie is. I highly recommend it. Its almost “old Spielberg" kinda good kid adventure. Superbly acted new take on King Arthur. What Spielberg couldnt get me to feel in Ready Player One, (camaradery, any deeper connection or emotion, let alone humor) is all working flawlessly here. You can see it doesnt have the budget of RPO but who cares, when the cast is as well assembled as the Goonies and the adventure and the tone in which it unravels is reminiscent of Super8 or Never Ending Story kind of tale. Worked for me very well. I laughed, I cried, (Yes Bernard, it changed my life) and above all had fun for two hours. 8/10 from me Might be best enjoyed by kids or those like me, who are still kids at heart. Also - this movie may have introduced my favorite reincarnation of Merlin ever to me.

Never doubted Joe Cornish for a second, also congrats to Andy Serkis' son on becoming the lead in a major motion picture.

Never doubted Joe Cornish for a second, also congrats to Andy Serkis' son on becoming the lead in a major motion picture. yep and he is really deserving of the role. both of the main two kids are. i would honestly not mind watching them minus the action and cgi just having any kind of regular kid adventure, thats how captivating and entertaining to watch the duo is. what a chemistry too. you totally buy their friendship and it all makes sense. well done casting. but now I NEED to learnt he hand gesture Merlin does in this movie. That just looks so slick. I need to know how to do that IRL.

seriously people they had a hand gesture coach just for those hand signals. If you ask me, its much better than any magic and hand gestures were used in any of the harry potter movies. because it feels… well really specific, just like the actor says here: "And the hand gestures they came up with… my brilliant hand movement coach Jennifer White and I, we developed them together. And Joe would pop in every now and then, and we might’ve been working on them for the whole day, and he’d say ‘No, no, no, that’s rubbish, it’s gotta be more like this’ and do some kind of weird impression, and then we’d have to go back and rework the entire thing. But he was right to be so specific, because he wanted it to be kind of inelegant and have that snap-crackle-pop element to it with noises, but it also had to be very, very specific, and hopefully every spell would be specific to what Merlin is doing"
here is the whole interview but do not read until you see the movie. important plot points revealed there.

Gotta say Nora , that this one holds no interest for me whatsoever. I am intrigued by what you said of Spielberg's RPO and what it didn't do for you, that this one did. RPO I saw twice, but yes, something was missing from the connection pov and you have put a well honed finger on it. It's interesting that Spielberg appeared to have waylaid a sense of humor\fun with RPO and while it was clever in parts—The Shining sequence—it was also a tad cold and distant, just like Kubrick's Shining misfire. I will be going to see Mary Poppins Returns though in a couple of days. i think its mainly the kids who make this a superb feat. i mean, who here doesnt know the story of arthur and excalibur right, nothing new to do there really. BUT the way these kids interact with each other, and with Merlin, is trully captivating. And the movie surprisingly DOES manage to bring something new to the entire genre of kids adventure movies. So I really value it for both of these reasons. Amazing acting, and a unique subplot within the genre. but i get how to many adults this wouldnt be that interesting. you really gotta love kids movies and movies with only kids in it. but you know how with some movies you know within the first or second scene you are gonna love it? this was like that for me with this film. I on the other hand, cannot make myself go see Mary Poppins. I bet its good, I am just in no rush to see it.

Did we really need another twist on the King arthur legend? NO! When are studios gonna realize its box office poison.
The film grossed $1.7 million on Friday for a projected weekend gross of $6.5 million-$7 million.
Directed by Joe Cornish, The Kid Who Would Be King is a big disappointment for 20th Century Fox and Working Title Films, which spent just under $60 million to produce the family-friendly film.

No!
Transformers: The Last Knight - 17' thought they could do whatever they wanted to, regarding a classic tale and twisting and distorting the myth of the King Arthur Legend. So Excalibur was really a transformer, who would have guessed....
to be clear this movie didnt offer a twist on the arthurt legend, the twist i was mentioning was in the fantasy genre (nothing to do with Arhur) I agree about the stupidity of the Excalibur transformer thing.

It's too long, the moments of originaly are few and far between, the climax isn't interesting, and Patrick Stewart's performance is weak.
