Did Howard Hughes actually include Melvin in his will? Even if he didn't this is a delightfully quirky flick with a great cast. Heck, even Gloria Grahame is in it.

I like that movie a lot. Hollywood only rarely gets working-class people right but Paul Le Mat pulls it off. LeMat used to post on the old board. Good chap.

I remember this. The scene with him and Robards sticks in the mind. I think Le Mat was listed as one of those actors who seemed destined for bigger success yet fell off the radar.
The real Melvin did an ice cream or soda drink commercial years later.

The real Melvin makes a brief appearance in the film. I remember it's also referenced in THE AMAZING HOWARD HUGHES tv movie with Tommy Lee Jones. He is asked about it in an interview to reporters.

Personally I think it happened as presented in the film. Howard was crazy as an outhouse rat even when he was a younger man, and it's just the kind of stunt he was capable of pulling. I saw Melvin interviewed once, and he impressed me as just too damn simple to make up a story like that.
Before I go I should say that crazy was the wrong adjective to apply to Howard. Poor people are crazy. Howard was eccentric.
And with that said, I would like to say "Ice Station Zebra" is a film that I can watch over and over again without getting tired of it.

Okay, but how long are your fingernails?! I chew them before they can get very long. I wonder how many here know the stories of Howard Hughes's eccentricity in later years. He was said to have grown long hair and fingernails and to have watched Ice Station Zebra repeatedly.

I've seen the movie with Tommy Lee Jones and thought it was very good. I also heard somewhere that Hughes was test-flying a Lockheed P-38 and it crashed, and it affected his mind for the rest of his life.

It has a construction regarding the passage of time that I have only seen successful a couple of times, where scenes separated by weeks, months, or even years are separated by a straight cut with no explanation. Another is "Tender Mercies"...
