This goes into fanwank territory more than fan theory, but an idea occurred to me; Buffy "died" in season 1, but not really, and she still managed to call another Slayer with Kendra. It was strictly a clinical death, by very limited human concepts of death; and she was able to be revived by nothing more than ordinary chest compression and mouth-to-mouth. No magic, no drug, surgery, no magic gourd or bone or urn; she stopped breathing, maybe her heart stopped briefly, but her soul clearly didn't leave her body. If Buffy was the sole occupant of a house, it's doubtful an uninvited vampire could have entered.
That said, Faith was arguably exponentially closer to death at the end of season 3 than Buffy was in season 1 - so what if another Slayer was called?
And I know what you're going to say, if another Slayer was called, why didn't they say anything? Why didn't she come to Sunnydale?
And I would respond the same way I do when discussing the idea that Buffy called a new Slayer in season 6 - that no one thought another Slayer had been called, because as far as the Council was concerned, the Slayer in question was still alive and they didn't know they should be looking for one. Buffy didn't know she was a Slayer until Merrick revealed it to her. And this just to show that some Slayers who get called are so far off the radar of the Council that they never had a Watcher to prepare them.
So here's where the title comes in and where we go a bit more into the weeds - what if it was Cordelia? She stakes her first vampire in the season 3 finale, then moves over the AtS, where her character matures by leaps and bounds. I know there's no obvious demonstration of her having superhuman strength, but she becomes a quick study when Angel teachers her to fight; regardless of what she said about it all being her cheerleader training, mirroring the moves isn't the same as applying them in a fight and holding your own, which she did often enough.
I believe there may be a fringe theory that Cordelia might have been a Potential. It could even track with her getting the visions, that if she were the Slayer her having the Slayer prophecy powers could maybe have made her something of a lightening rod for Doyle's vision powers. One might argue as to why she then needed to become a demon, but I contend that any danger posed by her visions was completely created by Jasmine/Skip in order to force her to make the decision to become "part demon;" paving the way for Jasmine's ultimate infiltration. And if she was an unwitting Slayer, Jasmine might have known this, making Cordelia even more appealing as a host/mother. Even as much as I dislike Cordelia and Angel starting to fall for each other, it's possible that Angel was able to sense something about her that reminded him of Buffy; especially as she grew into her role as something of another "champion".
