The publishing industry has been corrupt for decades. Truman Capote complained about it in the 60s. HP Lovecraft in the 30s.
They have moved away from works that have public interest to things that convey political agendas. "Insidiously molded" is how Lovecraft described it. Capote likened it to the mafia.
They probably set Mallory up just so they could knock him down for politics.

A superlative writer of the macabre, yes, but not someone whose social commentary should be given credence.
