No, saw one of the director’s earlier movies and was NOT a fan. It does seem like this one came and went.

These were my thoughts during the beginning of VOX LUX: "Wow, this school shooting scene was very well-shot! And this girl named CELESTE is singing a song to honor the victims while a music manager "discovers" her? This will be the story about her becoming a star and dealing with survivor's guilt, especially since the shooting indirectly catapulted her into stardom? That's very interesting!" Well, what a disappointment. It's ultimately the kind of story about a celebrity with an addiction and family issues that we've seen many times before. The shooting and a few other plot points tied together narratively, but not thematically. There are a lot of beautiful shots and some scenes were well-written, but Natalie Portman's performance is bafflingly bad. Why does Raffey Cassidy play young CELESTE and also CELESTE's daughter, while other characters are played by the same actor in both past and present scenes? It's very distracting. You know how in movies of this kind we see that the protagonist is popular for singing over-produced songs and they eventually realize that it's better to sing something simple yet meaningful? Here, it's the other way around. CELESTE belts out a nice ballad named WRAPPED UP and, when she signs a deal, she's convinced to sell out. I guess her follow-up tracks are supposed to be bad, but why not provide a better contrast (they outweigh the good ones in the soundtrack)? And why dedicate the last 10-15 minutes to her concert performance? Each tune was more unbearable than the one before! 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
