Eh it looks try too hard as well. i really enjoy Rebel so I didnt mind the trying hard. I was a bit let down that it was a roma tic comedy, I honestly thought it would be a bit different. Plus I am kinda tired of women disliking their loks as being one of the primery driving force behind these films (like I feel pretty, here the protagonist also constantly outs herself down). what if the woman had a DIFF problem for once, then her looks?

Its why i love crazy ex girlfriend it subverts that trope with Paula actually. She has regular sex with her husband and they are generally stable.

I found Isn't It Romantic to be "lousy"—a poor, albeit watchable, film. I appreciate the idea of using a plus-sized actress as the protagonist in a romantic comedy and trying to explore the resultant ironies, but the movie proves dopey rather than ironic. Moreover, the denouement and ultimate moral or message has certainly been done before in movies, giving Isn't It Romantic an "all this for that?" quality. The film's main problem is that it is a comedy which—for the most part—fails to be funny. Everyone seems to be going through the motions, as if the cast and crew arrived on the set, realized that the script proved ridiculous, yet had to go through with it anyway. This kind of movie requires a level of crispness and conviction that it unfortunately lacks, and while Rebel Wilson is respectable and vaguely sympathetic in the role, she seems unable to muster the necessary charisma and verbal panache. Indeed, everything about the movie is mechanical, which is definitely not how a romantic comedy should function.
Since Isn't It Romantic becomes a semi-musical later on, the filmmakers might as well have turned the whole movie into a musical. As I noted earlier, it is watchable, but a full-fledged musical might have been more entertaining, at least.

But regarding Nora's original post, she did write, "decent entertainment for women." I am a man, so ... yeah, I think this one is very female oriented. I kinda agree with most of what you write. Would have neen betee as a musical, was not ironic enough. BUT, can you name a one or two romantic comedies where “i dont need someone to complete me, I conplete me” has been done? i am not saying it has not, just cannot think of anything. thus I thought that was fairly original, when she didnt end up being “saved” by a guy loving her but her loving herself. I really do wish she didnt mistreat herself so badly both in this movie and real life though.

However, that idea about not needing anyone is ultimately superseded, I feel, by the romantic pairing of the Wilson character and her male counterpart in 'ordinariness.' And that idea—that the person that a lonely heart ultimately connects with is not some glamorous or overwhelmingly attractive fantasy, but rather that seemingly bland yet earnest person next door (or in the next cubicle) —has certainly been done many times before. Isn't It Romantic broaches the idea of not needing anyone to complete oneself, but that message or theme would have come through much more clearly without the typical romantic union at the end.
