Already posted this on FG, but here might the more appropriate place.
If you had to pick just one, what would you name as your #1 slasher flick of the early 80s. And by early 80s, I mean films released no later than 1983! Include reasons if you like.
Personally, I'd go with The Burning (1981). One of the best examples of the old-school summer camp slasher I've yet to encounter. It has everything a movie of this sort needs - a creepy (and yet strikingly beautiful) setting, well-developed and genuinely likeable characters, a compelling and disturbing antagonist, oodles of tension and some nice gore effects.

I choose The Burning as well, for the same reasons you listed. Plus I liked the Rick Wakeman score.

Good to know. Will add it to my Watchlist. Be sure to see the speical edition that was released on DVD/blu-ray about ten years ago, if you can find it. It contains the extra gore footage that was cut out in 1981 to avoid an X rating.

Only thing that sucks is that the added footage with the extended gore is grainy and poor when compared to the rest of the film. It’s the same that happened with Silent Night, Deadly Night.

Yeah it's too bad those scenes didn't get proper remastering. Guess they didn't want to spend the extra money to do that.
