In CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?, the epilogue appears on screen at the same time the end credits roll, making it hard to read both. That's right: Written words prevent the audience from learning about history. I would call this an irony, since the plot is about how author LEE ISRAEL forges letters from famous dead writers. However, she doesn't want to bury truths as much as make up truths. She doesn't even try to seek redemption, but Melissa McCarthy manages to make the viewer root and at times feel bad for her. Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells and Jane Curtin's performances are good too. If a movie has a low-key visual approach, it's so the viewer can focus on the story, characters and actors instead of the flashy style. Even by those standards, this movie's editing, camera work and shot compositions are flat. To be fair, not much could've been done to elevate the not-bad-yet-not-great script. 6/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
