I was watching a documentary on PBS a few weeks ago about all of our different kinds of ancestors.I find it totally fascinating that they were all different kinds of species and subspecies, particularly when you see that some of them overlapped like Neanderthals and modern man.
What do you think life would be like if there was another human-level species today? Would they simply be a part of our society and be looked at as another race? Would there be battles for supremacy?

Wasn't it theorized that they may have been better than us humans? There were just more of us and we swarmed 'em. Quantity over quality.

Some of them could get jobs on Star Trek.

The science fiction show "Babylon 5" did an analogy of this question. The Centauri and Xon were stand-ins for Humans and Neanderthals. This clip show how it went down:

The intellectually inferior species would be subjugated and enslaved. They would have built the pyramids for Pharaoh. You'd see chain gangs of apelike humans doing repairs on the freeway.
If they were still alive today they wouldn't be. We're past the point of slavery. Hell, animal cruelty laws are getting more severe in parts of the country. I don't think you're wrong it could have been like that at one point, but now? Today? Nah.
One thing your point makes me think of is slavery amongst our own kind. If we enslaved Neanderthals (or some other species) would we still have enslaved our own species based on race?

The one I saw the other day said they were stronger, more durable, etc., but we were smarter. We figured out how to hunt using weapons from a distance, while cavemen were still charging animals with spears in hand; which undoubtedly help keep our numbers up.

I've seen evidence that while Neanderthal brains differed from ours, they were essentially our intellectual equals. Some think they died because of deforestation where they could not handle themselves well in an open field because they were too robust and couldn't chase prey.

I think there would be a battle for supremacy You think there'd be less racism and war between countries, since we'd be busy fighting cavemen?

They'd probably become like the Morlocks. Doing the work while occasionally snatching an Eloi to eat.

I dunno, a Neanderthal's physical appearance is less advanced. They stoop and don't walk fully upright. They're hairy as fuck. Even if they weren't intellectually inferior they would have been treated as if they were. You're talking about old artwork that isn't based off reality.

You're talking about old artwork that isn't based off reality. I googled Neanderthal to get the deets before I responded. Yeah, they don't stoop. But they have the heavy brow bridge and don't look human. Like you said they were designed to live in forests and didn't have the adaptability of our species. They would have been enslaved as an inferior species. Better to say they weren't "fit" which is what biologists mean when they say something survived and reproduced. They might have been more primitive looking but it's tricky territory to say if that had part to do if they were dumber than us. They may have thought differently or had different kinds of intelligence.
Something like ownership based slavery like in the Old South is an anomaly since most slaves were either debt or war slaves that eventually would be freed, rather than inherited based off race or ethnicity. Neanderthals probably died a slow death from changes to the ecosystem, inability to keep up with humans, occasional warfare and interbreeding since evidence suggests all non African humans have a small amount of Neanderthal DNA.
Remains of humans going back thousands of years show we too were more robust and closer to Neanderthals but I think inbreeding probably didn't contribute too much to that. There are also other species of Neanderthal discovered recently called Devonians and other archiac sub species of humans like homo sapien idaltu.

In the specific case you're talking about Neanderthal and Homo Sapien are different races.
But then you move on to say "Would they simply be a part of our society and be looked at as another race? Would there be battles for supremacy?" Well that's whats happening the world over with different cultures and societies.
White people and black people have been having that fight since forever. Do you deny that's happening?
If so I don't think you know what society knows.

But we're talking about a rivalry between two different species here. It's similar to how we tamed and harnessed cattle. It would be ethically easier to justify their enslavement because we would simply rationalize they are not "human like us". And obviously we are inherently superior as a species because they died out and we survived. Using primates like chimps and gorillas for service or experiments is considered to be unethical.
You say things that survive are superior but you should know evolution isn't about being better, it's just about change. It's not a onward and upwards thing, it's just change.
Hell, how many creatures, including humans, have bacteria killed over millions and millions of years? If we go extinct from nuclear war or whatever, bacteria will be here long after we're gone. You seem to think intelligence is what makes something superior but these are germs, yet they survive, are the oldest and are everywhere.
