"Other areas of the curriculum are more of a priority." If this is the official reason being given ..... what a crock ! Especially when the curriculum at that age is learning how to read and write...

I asked earlier and have seen no reply .. is the USA the only place no longer teaching 'ritin' along with readin' and 'rithmatic ?
I certainly was taught writing. I wrote persuasive essays and learned how to defend my opinions in writing well before leaving elementary school. Children learn to read and write in kindergarten so I highly doubt you were writing essays at the same time.

What they write is the priority. If it's in a form that can be used to communicate (like print) I fail to see the issue. I would never have been able to express myself as well as I did if I couldn't print.

I could read it before I could hold a pencil long enough to print a word. I don't recall being taught. I never mastered writing it properly. Public schools haven't taught cursive writing in years. Recently my 15-year-old goddaughter asked me to stop sending her handwritten cards because she couldn't read them! I was taught by nuns in Catholic school. You gotta believe I know how to read and write cursive. Catholic school was SERIOUS about penmanship too.

Obviously I read first before I could do that.

come on .. script does not need to be pretty and don't go and take my comments personally … kls Am talking about that "education system" that says that being able to write legibly is less important than something else. That's what is a crock ! Looking around at what is being learned in schools now compared to what used to be taught … the whole system has failed. Kids graduating without being able to read a map, do basic arithmetic, read or write a compound sentence ! The excuse is "who needs it ?" There's an APP for that !

That may be because you had struggles when most kids don’t. Like I said, you learn to read and write in print and cursive in kindergarten and you learn the basic words first, then how to compose sentences.

klsNOT talking about you or those who WERE taught to write cursive.
What I am asking is : Is the USA the only country that no longer teaches "cursive writing" in the schools in their public education systems ? And if so .. why ?

Personally I just don't get the outcry over not teaching it to kids today as if there's such skill among middle aged or older folks. It's a very small portion who form it well or anywhere in the neighborhood of properly.

Recent grade school education encouraged "creative spelling" in the 1st and 2nd grades in which the students could spell however they wanted and then suddenly in the 3rd grade they had to UNLEARN all the bad habits they had acquired/
Stifle their creativity by asking that words be spelled properly … my aunt fanny ! ,

If it's difficult … don't make them learn it.
If it can be done on a computer, they don't need to do it properly by hand. . If they can look it up …. forget having them learn it .
Show them a video ! Don't make them read !

Most adults who think they can do it (properly or even at a level beyond barely being legible) are mistaken. I've seen many people with script writing worse than mine who believe they have mastered it. I'm just not deluded.

Bull, there’s a difference between sloppy writing and taking your time to write properly. I typically sign my name in a hurry so it’s not neat but if I write a thank you or sign a birthday card I take my time.

This isn't; about YOU and what you accomplished in grade school , kls Am talking about early Grade School when WRITING is normally taught and learned. Is only printing and using a keyboard being taught now

Yea because 1st and 2nd graders have such deep thoughts and great ideas. To heck with spelling and writing. BASICS are being ignored.
