20. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
This is according to votes on Rotten Tomatoes.
How many of the 20 have you seen?
I've only seen 6/20, I should watch more of the classics.
Only ones I haven't seen are A Hard Day's Night, La Grande Illusion, All About Eve, and Modern Times, though I may have seen the last two on tv. If King Kong wasn't on the list, it couldn't be taken seriously.

I have seen 3-4 out of the 20... -Psycho (1960) - 5/10 (I liked this on initial viewing but it did not hold up on a re-watch on Mar 5th 2013 (my initial viewing was sometime prior to Dec 27th 2011)) -The Wizard of Oz (1939) - 4/10 (I used to like this back-in-the-day when I was a kid etc but on a re-watch on Feb 9th 2018, which was my first re-watch of it since probably sometime in the 1990's, it no longer holds up and is pretty weak overall) -Casablanca (1942) - 2/10 (I could not finish it on Feb 21st 2018 due to boredom. I turned it off @ 47min) -Citizen Kane (1941) - ?/10 (I did not rate this one as I only viewed about the first 20min or so. but given my impression of it at this point I am fairly confident I won't like it had I seen the rest. or to be even more specific... if it did not get noticeably better in about 20 minutes past what I did see I would not be surprised if I turned it off due to boredom and if that happened it would be my usual for movies I can't finish due to boredom which is... 2/10) I am in no rush to see more as they tend to be overrated as from what I have seen there is not a single one I like. personally... I would not expect to like much, if anything, on that list had I seen them all. or put it this way... I would be very surprised if I score anything on that list more than a 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) at best. because, as many around these forums already know, I tend to avoid movies pre-1960's in general as they are largely dated in their overall style etc. p.s. it's possible I might have seen bits or pieces of... Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)/King Kong (1933) at some point along time ago but if I have I don't really remember much about them so I won't include those. TheGoodMan19I am sure most of us guys would agree because I always suspected that musicals are the most universally disliked genre among us males. p.s. the only exception to musicals I have seen so far is... La La Land (2016) (6-6.5/10 (within my Top 222 movies) ; I viewed this twice so far and it improved on a re-watch for me as it was a 6/10 on initial viewing). but I will say that first 5-7min or so, where they dance on the vehicles, is a great example of what NOT to do as it's boring. but thankfully that does not last long and does not damage the overall movie for me.

All of them. It's a mostly good list of largely expected candidates. Caligari and Grand Illusion placing so highly are mild surprises, I guess.

Sure, they are all highly respectable movies, but I wouldn't go thrusting this list on the uninitiated - and expect them to be converted. robin hood, dr. caligari, it happened one night, a hard day's night, snow white , could be easily replaced, for starters.

A Hard Day's Night is the most baffling inclusion. Sure, The Beatles are great but beyond the music does anybody truly consider it one of the greats? I think Robin Hood is easier to explain... one of those rousing classic movies that serves as an introduction for many to 'older' cinema. The kind of thing I would always end up watching on Sunday afternoons when I was very young.

I have seen all 20. Each should be seen by anyone who claims to love movies.
My top 3 are not on this list however. They would be:
The Maltese Falcon / John Huston (1941) Ikiru / Akira Kurosawa (1952) Vertigo / Alfred Hitchcock (1958)

My problem with musicals is just the unbelievably of it all. West Side Story, Seven Brides and the like are as believable as Plan 9 From Outer Space. Street Gangs and lumberjack spontaneously burst into song as often as people spontaneously burst into flames. I realize that movies require a suspension of reality, but A street gang suddenly performing well choreographed dance numbers, no way. I can deal with some musicals where the numbers are in context, 42nd Street, Yankee Doodle Dandy. I suppose Singin' in the Rain somewhat falls into that category, from what I remember. I did see La La Land, it wasn't the worst musical I've seen. The only ones I really like are Fred Astaire's. Love to watch him dance

TheGoodMan19 I think it mainly works for me because of the relationship of Gosling/Stone helps carry it and I like the ending as it's sort of bittersweet etc. plus, being it's a musical it makes it a bit outside of the norm for me as I was a little surprised to see my score go from a 6/10 to a 6-6.5/10 on my 2nd viewing as I did not expect that to happen. but being it's a musical and I actually like it, it's a bit more unique in comparison to movies I like in general which kind of boosts it a bit more in a way. I have heard his name before, but looking through his movies I have not seen any. but then again I have only seen 21 titles pre-1960 in general according to my IMDb account (and I only like two of those 21). it's possible I could have caught bits and pieces of a bit more than that in the past but that's pretty much about it. but thanks for the info.
I took a quick look at a video on YouTube with em...
